The collective pulse of Rams fans quickened the moment news broke that Justin Dedich was sidelined with a hand injury suffered on or around the Fourth of July.

Even with Rams coach Sean McVay clarifying that it stemmed from “a hand accident around the Fourth of July,” the association alone was enough to trigger uneasy flashbacks. Around the NFL, that date and that type of injury will forever be linked to one of the league’s most infamous cautionary tales.

Jason Pierre-Paul’s 2015 fireworks accident — one that cost him multiple fingers and forced him to reinvent himself as a player — still lingers in the background anytime those two elements intersect. It’s the kind of scenario that immediately sends minds racing.

That’s why the early concern around Dedich was understandable. But in this case, the reality is far less alarming.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Dedich suffered a broken hand in early July, but there is no expectation of any long-term damage. It’s an injury, not a turning point.

And that distinction matters for a player like Dedich, who has quietly become one of the Rams’ more trusted depth pieces along the interior. The former USC product fought his way onto the roster as an undrafted free agent and has since earned a reputation for reliability, versatility and a willingness to handle whatever role is asked of him.

In a camp where roster spots are earned snap by snap, Dedich’s absence is notable — but not catastrophic. His value hasn’t changed, only his availability has.

His return will ultimately come down to healing time. For now, the sigh of relief around the Rams is justified. This is a temporary pause, not a permanent problem.

The Rams have signed journeyman offensive guard Blake Hance to hold down the fort until Dedich returns. Dedich has started nine games in his two years with the Rams.
