Patrick Mahomes’ quick return to game action sure sounds promising.

The all-world quarterback was recently cleared in time for Chiefs training camp, which began this past week, just over seven months removed from tearing his ACL in Week 15 against the Chargers last December.

Head coach Andy Reid offered an encouraging update on the three-time Super Bowl MVP amid his road to recovery.

“He’s going a great job, he’s really doing everything that he normally does and is doing it well,” Reid told ESPN’s Dan Graziano in an interview after Saturday’s practice at Chiefs camp.

“We’re happy with that,” Reid added of the soon-to-be 31-year-old Mahomes. “We know he’s still progressing through it, but he sure looks sharp out here.”

Reid was asked about the possibility of Mahomes being back to full in-game participation in time for Week 1, which the quarterback noted is a goal of his.

“Keeping an eye on him and then letting the doctors guide us from there,” Reid replied. “As long as he’s safe, that’s what we’re looking at.”

Reid also noted that he doesn’t know if he’d play Mahomes in a preseason game, again suggesting he’ll trust the team doctors to guide the process.

Mahomes and the Chiefs had a down year even before the injury.

In 2025, Mahomes threw for 22 passing touchdowns to 11 interceptions, accumulating 3,587 passing yards and completing 62.7 percent of his passes.

Though it was a down year for Mahomes as a passer through 14 starts, he did have his most productive season on the ground, rushing for a career-high 422 yards on 64 carries and a personal-best five touchdowns.

Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL against the Chargers in December as the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons, and underwent surgery on Dec. 15.

The Chiefs play their first preseason game on Aug. 15 against the Rams, and their official 2026 season opener will see them hosting “Monday Night Football” against the Broncos on Sept. 14 for Week 1.
