The MLB trade deadline is now in the rearview mirror. And the San Diego Padres waited until the last possible moment to land another key piece to their rotation.

San Diego has acquired right-handed pitcher Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers, which The Post’s Jon Heyman reported at the exact time the trade deadline ended. The Padres are also acquiring third-baseman Gage Workman in the deal.

San Diego is sending left-handed pitcher Kash Mayfield (who was their No. 2 overall prospect) and Jackson Wolf back to Detroit in exchange for Mize and Workman.

Mize is having the best season is his big league career, posting a 2.70 ERA and tallying 85 strikeouts in 16 starts (86.2 innings pitched).

Mize was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. And while it took time for him to find his footing in the major leagues, he appears poised to help San Diego down the stretch this season.

The 29-year-old Mize joins a Padres rotation that also added former San Francisco Giants southpaw Robbie Ray before the deadline on Monday.

San Diego isn’t the only California MLB team to land an elite Detroit Tigers starting pitcher at this year’s trade deadline. The league is still reeling about two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal being dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend.

San Diego clearly felt a need to improve their own rotation in the wake of Los Angeles’ deal for Skubal. And while Mize isn’t quite on that level, adding him and Robbie Ray should put San Diego in a good spot as they push for the postseason.
