Mike McDaniel needed only a few practices in San Diego to confirm at least one part of Ron Burgundy’s reporting.

“Ron Burgundy wasn’t lying,” the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator told reporters Wednesday. “This place is sweet.”

McDaniel, known for delivering dry one-liners with the same expression he uses to explain pre-snap motion, made the observation while the Chargers practiced in their former home city.

His praise evoked Burgundy’s devotion to San Diego in “Anchorman,” though McDaniel wisely stopped short of endorsing the fictitious anchor’s historical research.

Burgundy famously claimed San Diego was “discovered by the Germans in 1904” before assigning the city a colorful — and wildly inaccurate — Teutonic translation.

The real history predates Burgundy’s version by several centuries; in fact, he missed the Indigenous history, two Spanish explorers and several hundred years.

McDaniel also offered real football analysis Wednesday.

Running back Omarion Hampton has made an equally strong impression.

McDaniel said Hampton has “shown the most growth of anybody” on the offense before issuing a warning to defenders confronting the 220-pound runner.

“Nobody wants to tackle that guy,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel is encouraging Hampton to stop his feet less frequently and trust his power when creases become crowded. Hampton possesses the size to run through contact but can occasionally search for an elusive escape instead of accepting the direct route.

Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal are change or pace with explosive upside, but Hampton remains positioned to lead a rushing attack expected to hold a central role in McDaniel’s offense.

Burgundy’s version of San Diego history belongs in a newsroom without fact-checkers. McDaniel’s plan is simpler: Give Justin Herbert quicker answers, keep Hampton moving forward and, at all times, stay classy.
