WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Jaxson Dart went from reeling to dealing. 

After finishing Tuesday’s practice on a low note with a John Harbaugh-criticized taunting penalty for flipping the ball at cornerback Greg Newsome II, Dart threw two interceptions against the second-team defense early in Wednesday’s practice before salvaging his day with three touchdown passes in a red zone period. 

“The football response absolutely was there,” Harbaugh said. “Yeah, he stepped up. A lot of third-down stuff we did. Fourth-down stuff, fourth down in the red zone to win the game, things like that. Yeah, he had a heck of a practice. It was impressive.” 

Harbaugh singled out Dart in the pre-practice meeting for foolishly throwing the ball at Newsome’s face after a touchdown run to end Tuesday’s practice. Dart ran for two more scores Wednesday and kept his celebrations in check. 

“That’s an opportunity for coaching points,” Harbaugh said. “So, we went over the sequence, and everybody knows. He was great about it. He’s great about accepting responsibility, and he’s a very accountable guy. I feel like all the guys are.” 

Harbaugh said he switched from starters-versus-starters in 11-on-11 drills to starters-versus-second-teamers for reasons other than to create a confidence boost. It allows one coordinator to ask for a specific scripted call from the other side and set up longer competitive periods. 

Newsome said he harbored no hard feelings toward Dart. 

“I’m a guy that chirps. I like stuff like that,” Newsome said. “So, we were laughing at lunch about it literally after practice. We were about to post a little selfie. It was funny. I like the aggression. I like that with my quarterback. So, it’s all good.” 

Newsome said Dart’s legs are a weapon in practice that complicates things for the defense because he is not allowed to be hit. 

“He’s proven, though,” Newsome said. “I mean, when he gets close to the end zone, he scores. I’m telling him he’s not going to score. So, there’s obviously going to be some back-and-forth all the time.” 

Former Lions head coach and Ravens offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg attended practice and spent part of it with Giants OC Matt Nagy. Mornhinweg was the Eagles OC when Nagy broke into coaching on that staff in 2008. 

The Giants placed DT Roy Robertson-Harris (torn Achilles) on season-ending injured reserve. There was initial hope that he could return before the end of the regular season, but that is no longer an option.There was initial hope that he could return. WR Beaux Collins, who made the 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie last season, was waived/injured after a disappointing start to camp. The roster spots were filled by DBs D.J. James and David Long Jr. 

WR Dalen Cambre, who played 16 offensive snaps and 89 special-teams snaps in seven games for the Giants as an undrafted rookie last season, is “making a move” with a bunch of highlight catches. 

“I think he’s done a great job,” Harbaugh said, “and he’s got our attention.”
