Like the characters in Sterling Point, fans are left with a lot to unpack by the time they reach Episode 8.

The new series from creator Megan Park follows adopted twins Annie (Ella Rubin) and Connor Jacobson (Keen Ruffalo), who learn that they have inherited a Canadian island from their dead, estranged grandfather, Gordon. The twist — because there always is one — is that the island wasn’t only left to them, but also to a girl named Ramona Campbell (Amélie Hoeferle), who they learn is their late adoptive mother Goldie’s biological daughter.

More secrets and questions emerge for Annie once she arrives in Sterling Point, as she weighs whether her adoptive father Steven (Jay Duplass) has been hiding information about their mother from her and her brother. Meanwhile Ramona, who considered Gordon as a father figure, is hit with the bombshell surrounding who her biological father is.

The familial drama only rivals the romantic drama spurred on by the two boys Annie sets her eyes on over the summer: Ellis (Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie) and Rory (Daniel Quinn-Toye). Sterling Point Ending Explained: Who is Ramona’s Dad? How Does Goldie Die?

Not only is Ramona grappling with the identity of her biological father, but also the fact that her mother Goldie died while giving birth to her. As Joe (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) reveals to Annie, Goldie had a heart condition, and died after delivering Ramona via C-section.

Throughout the majority of Sterling Point, viewers are led to believe that Joe is Ramona’s father, as Annie, Ramona, and Ellis uncover that he and Goldie dated, and that he was there with her at the hospital the night that she died while giving birth to Ramona. At the end of Sterling Point Episode 6, ” Rory’s mother Denise (Missi Pyle) drops that bomb on Ramona, resulting in Ramona running away.

However, Sterling Point Episode 7, “Maybe It’s Mackerel,” proves to be a turning point in this storyline. After Maple (Mabel Strachan) suggests that Ramona likely went home to Barry, where she lived with her late grandfather-turned-father figure Gordon, Oona (Bo Bragason) has Rory lend her one of his father’s car so she can go find her. It turns out that Ramona had fled to Barry to talk to Gordon’s lawyer, who told her that she can get Joe to sign some paperwork in order to waive his impending guardianship of her.

The tables turn when Ramona learns that Steven is colorblind — Annie reveals that she helps organize socks so that he “doesn’t mix them up” — just like her. After some research, Ramona discovers that in order for a girl to be colorblind, she must inherit the colorblindness gene on both of her X chromosomes. She finds Steven and asks him to spit in a tube for a DNA test.

But, she keeps this a secret from everyone until the results arrive in Sterling Point Episode 8, “I’m the Kid,” when Ramona’s suspicions are confirmed: Steven is her father. Hoeferle recalled to DECIDER “being very, very shocked” by this revelation when she finally found out, describing the bombshell as a “shock to the system.” Rubin remembered a phone call she had with Park after receiving the scripts for Episodes 3 and 4, where the series creator teased more suspense in store.

“I was like, ‘Wait, just to be clear, this is the twist?’ And she was like ‘Well, there’s a twist on a twist,’” Rubin shared. “And then it was revealed to me, I think that’s how it happened and I was genuinely really surprised. It’s amazing to be in a show and surprised by what is happening in the plot.”

Stirling Point: Who Does Annie End Up With?

It may feel like Rory has the upper hand in the battle for Annie’s heart, sleeping with her after taking her out to a club for her birthday in Sterling Point Episode 5, “I’m Not A Shots Girl, Either.” He seemed to have sealed the deal after he confides in her about why he quit playing piano, claiming that he could not handle another child prodigy a year younger than him beating him, and asking his cousin to break his hand for him. Then Annie catches Rory at the piano in Episode 7, in a moment that is a tad awkward.

Quinn-Toye weighed in on whether Rory was lying or just simply a perfectionist while speaking with DECIDER, explaining that he “think[s] it’s a little bit of both.” He said Rory “puts a lot of pressure on himself and he speaks about his anxieties during the show,” conceding that “maybe there’s a little bit of wanting someone to feel sorry for him.” On the other hand, he also acknowledged that Rory is “a little flustered” when Annie catches him performing.

“It speaks to just that wider theme with Rory, that he’s not really being himself,” he added. “He’s not being authentic, really. It feels like he has to perform a version of himself, so it will leave it up for some audience interpretation, but I think it’s a bit of both.”

Episode 7 also features a turning point for Annie and Ellis, who after nearly a whole season of engaging in a will-they-won’t-they situation, share a passionate kiss in the closet, making Annie question whether her budding relationship with Ellis is the real thing. The two spend nearly every waking moment together as the summer comes to an end. While Annie considers remaining in Sterling Point after the summer ends, Ellis rapidly becomes a strong point in the pro column.

… and What About Ramona and Oona?

After Ramona learns that Steven is her father, she talks things out with Oona, who jumps to the conclusion that she will leave her behind for New York. Oona decides it would be best for them to cut things off before they begin hating each other, stunning Ramona in the process. While Ramona grieves the breakup and her newfound disdain for the island she once loved, Connor reminds her of Denise’s offer to buy the island.

Do Annie and Ramona Switch Places? Do They Sell Sterling Point?

Annie asks Ramona to wait a year until they ultimately decide to sell the island, convincing Ramona by explaining that while she got to be “girl with an alive dad” her whole life, she never got to be “girl with dead mom” like Ramona, who got to soak in her memory through living with Gordon and even got to sleep in her bed every summer at Sterling Point. The series closes out with the two girls switching places, as Ramona wakes up in the same manner that Annie did at the start of Sterling Point — in a bed in New York City, with automated curtains parting to reveal the Manhattan skyline. Meanwhile Annie appears to stay in Sterling Point, jumping into the lake.

While speaking to the complexity of their dynamic as sisters and to the slightly rocky state that the season left their relationship in, Hoeferle told DECIDER that she does not “think they’re fully separated.”

“I think their relationship is very volatile and constantly shifting, but they’re sisters,” she said, “and I think they’ll always find their way back to each other, whether that’s in argument or in harmony.”

Rubin chimed in, explaining that she and Hoeferle “as people” are rooting for their characters’ sisterly bond, noting that they “just always wanted them to be in a good place the way [she’s] sure the audience will feel.”

“Like you just are desperate for them to be experiencing the love that you know that they’re capable of,” she added. “I think that the end actually really unites them in this beautiful way. I think that they realize them separating is kind of them both knowing the dream that they need to follow, the self that they to pursue. It’s a beautiful thing to see.”

The two actresses agreed that their characters are “able to give each other something” and “need each other,” while also “allowing each other to pursue the life that they know that they should be living.”

Does Connor Find His and Annie’s Birth Parents?

As Connor comes to terms with the revelations surrounding his family throughout the series and where he stands in all of it, he decides to try seeking out his and Annie’s birth parents. He receives a call from the adoption agency toward the end of the season, and finds out that his birth mother would also like to get in touch with him. Ruffalo told DECIDER that he “love[s] the idea” of Ramona and Connor “hit[ting] the city” in another season, with “Ramona actively participating in the finding of” Connor’s biological parents.

“I think it’s hard,” he explained. “Obviously Annie gets to go to Muskoka, and she kind of finds her family and makes a family for herself. But I think Connor never really gets that. I think he feels close to Ramona but not in the same way that Annie does. I think he does feel like an other. Yeah, he never really truly fits, I guess, throughout the show. ”
