The man appeared to have jumped off the building, according to sources.

The expensive 15-story-tall co-op, built in 1931, is just steps away from the mayor’s residence and has has had many rich and famous residents over the years, with former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama having eyed buying into the building.

It counts among its previous tenants a Vanderbilt exiled former first lady of China Madame Chiang Kai-shek, media mogul Steve Ross and socialite Brooke Astor. Author Tom Wolfe once called the building one of only 42 “good buildings in the city.

But the building has gained a reputation as potentially cursed because of a history of tragedies. Both author Jean Stein and Carter Cooper, the son of fashion designer and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt, took their own lives by jumping from penthouses at the building.
