A Navy veteran who was allegedly stabbed to death by a teen in a clown costume was identified by his hospital bracelet, his heartbroken family told a local outlet.

The relatives of 78-year-old John Wesley Allen Sr. told 5 On Your Side he had not been feeling well and went to a VA hospital for testing before heading to his sister’s house Monday.

But before he could get there, he was allegedly fatally stabbed by a 15-year-old in a clown costume at a bus stop, according to investigators.

His family told the outlet Allen was identified by the hospital bracelet that was still on his wrist.

Allen’s family believes he was heading for a surprise visit to his oldest sister, Delores Fowler.

“He’d never make an appointment. He’d just call me and say, ‘Are you at home?’ Then I’d say, ‘Yeah, I’ll come get you at the MetroLink station or the bus stop,’” Fowler told NBC News.

A short time before Allen’s death, the clown-costume-wearing teen was seen approaching a nearby home and glaring bug-eyed into the camera.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he chillingly says to the camera in a Ring doorbell clip timestamped at 9.11 p.m. Monday.

Illinois State Police said that following a report of “a body in the roadway,” authorities arrived on the scene and quickly identified a juvenile suspect and took him into custody after finding him at a residence.

On August 6, he was formally charged with first-degree murder.

Allen’s relatives said they did not know the accused teen.

“I’m just wondering why this person did this. He didn’t know my brother,” Allen’s sister, Marie Stanford, told 5 On Your Side. “He just came up and random stabbing him. That don’t make no sense.”

“Now we have to sit here and go through this pain and suffering because of some random act?” Allen’s niece, Tenia Stanford, told the outlet.

The family also revealed that Allen, the youngest of six siblings, had been a bus driver for over three decades.

“My uncle has been driving buses over 35 years, and this is the first time ever something happened to him… getting off the bus,” his niece told the outlet.
