The shortest offseason in sports is about to come to an end.

The Premier League crowned a champion on May 24, then the World Cup took over from June 11 to July 19, and just like that, the new European soccer season is set to get underway with Arsenal taking on Coventry City on Aug. 21.

And while the offseason was short and sweet, we are entering a new era in the Premier League. Pep Guardiola has left Manchester City, Eddie Howe is out at Newcastle, and Xabi Alonso is now managing Chelsea. In total, nine of the 20 clubs in the league will have a new head coach for 2026-27.

It’s not just the managers who have been on a merry-go-round this summer. A slew of generational players have also departed England’s top flight, including Mo Salah, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Marc Cucurella, and Anthony Gordon.

With so much change at the top of the league, the door is open for some surprising results in 2026-27, and one dark horse is in prime position to take advantage of the mayhem: Leeds United.

The German manager’s philosophy is well known at this point. He wants to dominate possession, and he wants to do so by winning the ball back as quickly as possible.

But Farke showed something new last season. With Leeds struggling in the middle of the marathon season, he adjusted his tactics and had his team play a more direct, physical style. He also cooled on his all-action press, allowing his defense to sit deep and try to catch opponents on the counter.

The adjustment worked. Leeds lost just one of their last nine matches on the season and comfortably avoided relegation.

But just saying that the Peacocks avoided relegation is actually a disservice to what they accomplished throughout the 38-game campaign. Although they finished in 14th with 47 points and a minus-7 goal difference, Leeds’ underlying numbers were pretty encouraging.

According to UnderStat, Leeds boasted the ninth-best expected points (56.5) in the league and were powered by a defense that conceded the seventh-fewest expected goals against.

With some better finishing luck and better defense against set pieces, Leeds would have been fighting for a spot in Europe.

And while Leeds’ statistical profile from last season is heartening, the real reason I’m bullish on them being a surprise package in ’26-27 is because they are a picture of stability compared to a lot of teams in the Premier League right now.

Leeds has not seen that much change this summer. Farke is back for his fourth season, most of the main contributors are still on the roster, and the club’s got a clear identity.

It also won’t hurt that Leeds won the race to sign standout goalkeeper James Trafford, shoring up a position that’s caused them issues in recent seasons.

The Lilywhites are 10/1 at FanDuel to finish in the top six, but there’s even more value in another market. Leeds is 200/1 at bet365 to be top of the table on Christmas Day, and that’s a long-shot worth taking. They look well-positioned to fly out of the gates while bigger clubs adjust to new managers, new signings, and new identities.
