A temporary restraining order has been vacated by a Texas judge, allowing the removal of Tulsa National Little League from the Southwest Region Tournament after the Little League International Tournament Committee ruled one of its players ineligible. 

As has been the case in youth sports recently, the decision was quickly challenged in the courts and Judge Ryan Luna of the 414th District Court granted a TRO on Monday before filing a motion to dissolve it on Tuesday following an emergency hearing.

Little League Baseball filed a 330-page emergency motion with the judge earlier in the day Tuesday, asserting that a player on Tulsa’s roster during the Oklahoma State Tournament was ineligible to play due to the player’s residency. 

According to the filing, the organization’s rules do allow a player who lives outside of the league’s boundaries and doesn’t attend school within the boundaries to still compete if they have a sibling that is 7 years old or younger in the league’s Challenger Division. 

The Challenger Division is a Little League program for children with physical and intellectual challenges. 

However, according to the filing, the Tulsa National player’s father acknowledged to Little League officials that the player’s sibling who had been enrolled in the Challenger Division was 10 and not 7 years old, which had been listed on the child’s registration.

The father also said that the child had not actually participated in practices or games in the program, the filing stated, which made the child’s older sibling ineligible for the Tulsa team. 

Among other points the Little League committee made in the legal filing was that Boerne Little League, which represents Texas West, already won the de facto Southwest Region championship and several players and their families already left Waco, Texas, where the tournament was taking place.  

“We appreciate the Court’s timely and considered decision to vacate the Temporary Restraining Order, allowing enforcement of the Tournament Committee’s decision to remove Tulsa National Little League from the Southwest Region Tournament and declare its previous game a forfeit. The decision upholds our commitment to a fair and equitable experience for all children based on our Official Rules, Regulations, and Operating Policies,” Little League said in a statement.

“We empathize with the children of Tulsa National Little League and the likely disappointment this decision has caused. We recognize how memorable the Little League experience is for all children and the critical role that parents and adult volunteers are entrusted with to ensure that every child is cared for, treated fairly, and afforded a safe and positive experience. We sincerely hope that those entrusted with operating the Little League program recognize the responsibility they bear toward the children in their care and act accordingly—with integrity, fairness, respect, and a commitment to the mission of the Little League program.”

Christian Dennie of Dennie Sports Law, the Tulsa team’s counsel, did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment. 

Boerne (Texas West) will now move on to the Little League World Series in Williamsport later this month.
