Jets fans will get to see No. 2 overall pick David Bailey in his first preseason game action Friday night against the Buccaneers and you can expect him to make some splash plays. 

Bailey has been the star of training camp. The edge rusher seems to be living in the offensive backfield and he frustrated the Buccaneers this week in joint practices. 

“Well, we all know that he’s a good player,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “We all know that he’s a damn good pass rusher. So, there’s times where you expect that, does that make sense? You expect him to win a number of his battles when it comes to that. And then you also expect things to happen to where you have to coach him and he’s going to learn some things, too. So, it really goes both ways when you look at that.” 

Glenn said he was actually more interested in watching the plays in practice where Bailey did not win so that he could coach him up on those plays. 

The Jets took Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick, choosing him over Arvell Reese, who went to the Giants at No. 5. Bailey has impressed through his first few weeks of camp. 

“I’ve been around a ton of rookies,” veteran linebacker Demario Davis said. “You know, seven to 10 every year for 15 years. I’ve seen some who were projected high not play up to that level. I’ve seen some who were projected low and played above that level. 

“He looks like a No. 2 pick. He looks like everything that’s been advertised or more. I think his instincts of not only rushing the quarterback but just getting to the football in general, the way that he plays the run with savviness, and I think he already has a lot of elements of a pro. He’s mature for his age.” 

While Jets fans will get to see Bailey as well as fellow first-round pick WR Omar Cooper Jr. on Friday night, they will not see TE Kenyon Sadiq or CB D’Angelo Ponds, two other highly touted rookies who are dealing with injuries. 

Sadiq practiced early in training camp but has been sidelined for the past two weeks with a setback following sports hernia surgery in May. Glenn said he expects Sadiq to be ready for Week 1. 

Ponds has yet to practice during training camp because of a calf injury. Glenn has repeatedly downplayed Ponds’ injury but it will be a bigger concern if he does not get on the practice field soon. Ponds is projected to be the starting nickel cornerback but that will become increasingly unlikely the longer he is out. 

The Jets waived DE Eric Watts with an injury settlement.
