Tom Brady blasts NFL stars for looking for ‘easy way out’ in preseason
Back in Tom Brady’s day, the preseason meant something.
The all-time great quarterback is fed up with the current generation’s lack of willingness to play in the preseason.
“Preseason… Regular… I never wanted to be taken off the field,” Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl winner, said in a post on his Instagram story. “Too many people looking for easy ways out these days. When you’re a football player, and it’s football season, your job is to play football.”
Brady’s comments come as part of a video posted on social media of him playing a Patriots preseason game in 2010 with Randy Moss in the third quarter with 5:11 left in the game.
The poster of the clip was flabbergasted to see the 15-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer playing that late in a preseason game, but even more surprised to see him run a play-action pass and go route to Moss for a touchdown.
The Brady-led Patriots wound up losing the game 36-35 to the then-St. Louis Rams, while the first-team offense punted on its first four drives, perhaps forcing Brady to stay out there longer.
Brady also played into the fourth quarter, when he led the team on a 10-play, 98-yard touchdown drive before finally giving way to backup Brian Hoyer.
Most teams opt to sit starters completely during preseason games while others only give their first-teamers a drive or two in their three preseason games.
Defenders of the lack of star power in preseason games include Odell Beckham Jr., who suffered an ankle injury in a 2017 Giants exhibition after a dirty hit by Browns cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun.
Beckham wound up missing time and later broke that ankle right upon returning and was hardly ever the same after the injuries.
Other players that suffered preseason injuries include former Packers receiver Jordy Nelson, who tore his ACL in 2015, and Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, who re-tore his ACL in a 2014 preseason game, effectively ending his career as a true franchise player.
On Saturday, Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart might’ve been thinking differently of preseason NFL action, as he was clobbered on a missed block by Tyrone Tracey that left him on turf for an extended period before being helped off the field.
