Chargers offensive line suffers another brutal blow with $30 million center carted off

The Los Angeles Chargers suffered another offensive line injury Tuesday when starting center Tyler Biadasz was carted off during their joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers.

Biadasz appeared to suffer a leg injury during 11-on-11 work after a 49ers defender fell on him, according to reporters at the practice. He was unable to put weight on the injured leg before leaving the field on a cart.

There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.

The timing makes the situation particularly concerning for Los Angeles. Biadasz was one of the Chargers’ biggest offseason additions, signing a three-year, $30 million contract after spending the previous two seasons in Washington.

His arrival was viewed as a major part of the team’s effort to stabilize the protection in front of Justin Herbert after injuries devastated the offensive line last season.

Biadasz also appeared to be an ideal fit for new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s system. McDaniel previously praised the veteran’s athleticism, ability to operate in space and strength protecting the interior.

“He’s a player that we think — specifically with the nuances and tools we give the center in both run and pass that are a little unique — we think his skillset really plays with what we like to do,” McDaniel said earlier this offseason.

If Biadasz is forced to miss significant time, rookie second-round pick Jake Slaughter would be a natural candidate to step into the starting lineup.

The Chargers are already monitoring left tackle Rashawn Slater as he works his way back from a flare-up in his surgically repaired knee. Slater is expected to return to practice this weekend, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

After watching injuries to Slater and Joe Alt contribute to major protection problems last season, the Chargers will now anxiously await more information on another key piece of their rebuilt offensive line.
