A new season of Apple TV‘s Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso means new cast members, characters, and new AFC Richmond players.

The first two episodes of Ted Lasso Season 4 saw Ted (Jason Sudeikis) reunite with Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), Beard (Brendan Hunt), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift). And after his return to Richmond, he finally meets the women’s team, including Coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) and players like Boots (Jude Mack).

Episode 3, “Richmond’s Got Talent,” sees the Lady Greyhounds hold open tryouts to fill out their roster, which means we meet some new MVPs, including Shannon (Shannon Hayes), Lizzie (Faye Marsay), and the team’s new striker, Gemma Jay (Abbie Hern).

Who Is Gemma In Ted Lasso Season 4?

As Decider noted in our Ted Lasso Season 4 review, Gemma Jay is a skilled striker who gave up her professional football career to pursue a law degree. She’s also a former teammate of Alice’s, and the two have quite a bit of history to unpack.

When Decider chatted with Hern ahead of Ted Lasso‘s Season 4 premiere, here’s what she had to say about Gemma and what we can expect from her dynamic with the Lady Greyhounds assistant coach.

“Gemma and Alice have a history, but I think they were both in very different places in their careers and lives when they played together. And they have to try and figure out how they’re going to make it work, and how they are going to work to get Richmond to where they need to be,” Hern said.

While Gemma and Alice may be at odds, Hern assures viewers that she and Tanya Reynolds really hit it off on set. “She’s genuinely one of the most talented people I have ever met, and the most real person I have ever met,” Hern told DECIDER. “She’s such a gift. And she made me feel so at ease. She was like, ‘OK, let’s just mess up and have fun together. Do you have any idea what’s going on? Neither do I.’ And I’m really hoping that translates on camera.”

Gemma Jay on Ted Lasso is played by Abbie Hern, a 29-year-old Welsh actor who made her acting debut in Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone in 2020. In the six years since, the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama alum has starred in a number of projects, including The Pact, Peaky Blinders, Enola Holmes 2, and My Lady Jane.
