Willie Nelson new music

On May 29, Nelson dropped his 156th album “Dream Chaser.”

It’s plodding, contemplative, thoughtful and shockingly powerful for a 93-year-old who shows no signs of slowing down.

Things get underway with the title track “Dream Chaser.” The simple, stripped-down track is un-fussy and just might make you well up as Nelson croons about time vanishing right before his eyes. Don’t be deceived by how plain this song sounds; “Dream Chaser” contains multitudes.

Other notable highlights here include the sweetly simple “Fly Away,” jaunty bop “Whiskey Wants Me To,” bluesy slow dance-ready “Wonder What I’m Gonna Do,” heartbreaking ballad “I Don’t Think I’ve Cried Today” and the dreamy barroom tearjerker “Developing My Pictures,” which closes the exemplary record out.

Out of everything here though, we were most dazzled by the high-energy, boot-scoot boogie banger “After All” where Willie keeps up with thrilling guitar picking, harmonica wailing and plinky piano. The mere fact that this song exists is a miracle. The fact that it’s genuinely invigorating is nearly unbelievable.

Neil Young new music

Ahead of the release of “Second Song,” Young released the lead single that shares a name with the album.

Over 11 minutes, the scratchy, sensitive tune grows on you. There’s no great build, just simmering warmth that washes all over you through Young’s withered vocals (he sounds better with age), unfussy harmonica and unhurried guitar work.

In short, it’s classic Neil and would fit right in with his lo-fi ’60s folk.
