The San Francisco 49ers placed running back Patrick Taylor Jr. on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

The veteran was poised to earn a spot on the 49ers’ 53-man roster, which makes it another setback for an already ailing running back room.

Taylor injured his shoulder last season and has now gone on season-ending IR in the preseason to make it his second straight year with a long-term injury.

San Francisco re-signed Khalil Herbert to take Taylor’s place on the roster.

Herbert was cut from the team earlier this week. The 28-year-old had six carries for 18 yards and two catches for 35 yards in the 49ers’ preseason opening loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Herbert was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s spent time with a number of teams throughout his career, including the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Bears.

Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Herbert has appeared in 63 games (31 starts), posting 416 carries for 1,957 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also added 54 receptions for 316 yards and two scores.

The injury woes in San Francisco haven’t ceased as running backs Jordan James and Isaac Guerendo are dealing with ongoing injuries.

James sustained fractured ribs on the second day of training camp, and Guerendo is recovering from a torn pectoral muscle sustained in the offseason.

If Guerendo is activated off the Physically Unable to Perform List, he will have the chance to compete for the final running back spot after not having practiced all summer.

Guerendo will be stacked against Herbert and Sincere McCormick if he gets activated before the season begins.
