If you love Anthony Bourdain, then you won’t want to miss the new Anthony Bourdain biopic movie, Tony, which follows his early years working his way up through kitchen jobs in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Tony, which opens wide in U.S. theaters this weekend, was directed by Matt Johnson, with a script written by Johnson, Matthew Miller, Todd Bartels, and Lou Howe. It’s loosely based on Bourdain’s own 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential, which features stories from Bourdain’s young, wild years as an aspiring writer-turned-cook bopping around the east coast. Dominic Sessa, best known for his critically-acclaimed, breakthrough performance in The Holdovers, stars as the 19-year-old Bourdain, who gets rejected from a writing fellowship in 1973, and impulsively follows his crush, Nancy (played by Emilia Jones), to Provincetown, Massachusetts, instead. He ends up hired by a restaurant owner, Chef (Antonio Banderas) as a dishwasher. And the rest is history.

Tony is not yet streaming on HBO Max. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. That said, we do expect to see Tony streaming on HBO Max eventually—thanks to the A24 and Warner Bros. deal—but we’re not sure when.
The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights Tony after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, The Drama, began streaming on HBO Max about four months after its release in theaters.
If Tony follows a similar release strategy, you might see Tony on digital in about a month, around late September 2026, and streaming on HBO Max in about four months, around mid-to-late December 2026.
This is all speculation. The A24 digital and streaming releases have varied by title. If you want to watch Tony right away, you can catch the Anthony Bourdain movie everywhere in U.S. theaters on Friday.
