Ken Jennings might be the current face of Jeopardy!, but he apparently has some competition for the title of his wife Mindy Jennings’ favorite host.

In a new People interview ahead of the Season 4 premiere of Jeopardy! Masters, Ken, 52, admitted that Mindy actually prefers former guest host Aaron Rodgers — and her reasoning is pretty straightforward.

“He was a solid guest host,” Ken said of the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback. “He was my wife’s favorite, actually.”

Ken, who knows a thing or two about Jeopardy! hosting himself, naturally wanted to know what Rodgers had that he didn’t.

“When I tried to figure out why, I was like, ‘Honey, you know I was a guest host, too.’ And she was like, ‘Well, he’s very handsome.’ ”

There’s not much of an argument to make against that.

Rodgers, 42, hosted Jeopardy! for two weeks in April 2021, several months after the November 2020 death of longtime host Alex Trebek. The NFL star made it clear after his stint that he would have been interested in sticking around, even expressing an interest in becoming the show’s permanent host.

He told The Pat McAfee Show that he put plenty of work into preparing for his guest-hosting run, watching episode after episode to get a better understanding of what the job required.

“I watched hours and hours and hours of episodes,” he said of his preparation for the job. “Luckily, Netflix has a few seasons, and I went back to DVR. But I had to watch from a different perspective — from Alex’s perspective. I couldn’t watch it as a fan anymore.”

And if the job required one more change, Rodgers was willing to make that sacrifice, too.

“If [shaving] is ever a prereq to get the full-time gig, no problem with it at all. No problem at all … I would love to be the host of Jeopardy!, yes,” he said.

That particular Jeopardy! career path didn’t work out for Rodgers, of course. Ken eventually landed the permanent hosting job, following his own remarkable history with the show.

Before he became synonymous with Jeopardy!, though, Ken was just a computer programmer in Utah trying to figure out what came next. He was approaching 30 when he first appeared on the show as a contestant in 2004, and his life at the time looked considerably different.

“I was pushing 30 when I went on Jeopardy! and we were kind of doing okay. My wife and I had just had our first baby, and we’d just bought a little starter home right outside Salt Lake City, Utah,” he said. “I was a computer programmer — it was going OK. The only thing is I didn’t love my job. Like, I wasn’t a very good programmer.”

Mindy apparently knew her husband had other interests, including an idea to paint murals for children. Ken said she reminded him that he’d once considered turning that idea into a career.

“This never happened because I got lucky and I got to go on my favorite show,” he told People of his life taking an unexpected path. “So there is a world out there where maybe I’m painting Winnie the Pooh murals in a daycare center somewhere.”

Instead, Ken’s Jeopardy! appearance changed the course of his life. He and Mindy, who share two children, son Dylan and daughter Caitlin, eventually found themselves raising a family while Ken went from legendary contestant to the person standing behind the Jeopardy! lectern.

And being the host apparently has its benefits at home, too — although Mindy isn’t necessarily thrilled about one of them.

Ken previously explained that his Jeopardy! job gives him an unexpected advantage when it comes to parenting their kids.

“Weirdly, [my job] gives me a bit of a parenting advantage,” he told People at the opening night of the TCM Classic Film Festival on April 30.

“Like, if you’re the host of Jeopardy!, your kids will believe you when you try to parent. And it drives my wife bonkers. [She’ll be] like, ‘I just said that same thing. Why are you believing Dad?’ And they’re like, ‘Host of Jeopardy!’ ”

So Ken may have the Jeopardy! hosting job, the impressive résumé and a place in the show’s history. But when it comes to winning over Mindy, it sounds like Aaron Rodgers still has one very important advantage.

He’s handsome.
