Jed York’s $140 prostitution arrest comes after $8.5 billion record-breaking valuation of 49ers

There’s a lot at stake for 49ers owner Jed York.

In May 2025, York sold a 6% minority stake of the 49ers at a record sports team valuation.

The 49ers’ sale allowed York to retain control of the team while also increasing the organization’s value to more than $8.5 billion.

The headlines were not as positive for York on Monday. The 46-year-old allegedly tried to pay a woman $140 for sex over the weekend at a trailer park in East Palestine, Ohio.

He went to a meeting location after responding to an ad on a known prostitution website where he was taken into custody after a Mahoning Valley Human trafficking Task Force agent found York had “in his possession his cellular device which was used to arrange the criminal act,” according to court documents.

Beyond owning more than 90% of the NFL franchise, York is a co-owner of Leeds United in the English Premier League (valued at $650-800 million) and Rangers F.C. in the Scottish Premiership (valued at $150-195 million) through 49ers Enterprises.

The York family’s ownership of the 49ers dates back to 1977 when Edward DeBartolo Sr. purchased the team for $13 million. The storied franchise has featured some of the greatest players in NFL history, including Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott.

Since the York family assumed ownership, the 49ers have won five Super Bowls and remain one of the top franchises in the league. The May 2025 minority stake sale only increased the franchise’s value as the league’s approval of private equity firms investing in its teams has provided a new avenue for organization’s to improve.

York’s arrest certainly stains the franchise’s celebrated legacy after becoming the 49ers principal owner in March 2024.

On Monday, York cut a plea deal with prosecutors after he was booked into county jail on two charges: One count of engaging in prostitution and one count of possessing criminal tools.

“As this is a legal matter, which has been resolved, we will not be providing any further comment at this time,” the 49ers said in one-line a statement.

York is under review by the NFL, per the personal conduct policy, which is pertinent to all league personnel not just players. There is a chance he faces additional discipline from the league for his actions.
