Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 4 tore our favorite couple apart and brought our new favorite team together.

Spoilers for Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 4 ahead.

In an effort to break up locker room cliques, “Greyhounds’ Day Off” saw Ted (Jason Sudeikis), Beard (Brendan Hunt), and Coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) cancel practice and take the team to Pub Trivia Night to bond. Naturally, that ended in their arrests! Meanwhile, Keeley (Juno Temple) challenged Roy (Brett Goldstein) to go on 10 dates with other women to prove that he was ready to be with her again. Naturally, that ended in disaster! But not the kind you think…

Since Ted Lasso is such a thoughtfully crafted love letter to fans, each week until Season 4’s October 7 finale, Decider will be taking a closer look at each episode and highlighting five moments that deserve to be put under the microscope. Whether they’re blink-and-miss-it details, brilliant Easter eggs, or major scenes that need to be talked through in greater depth, we’re here to obsess over, hypothesize, and dissect the series alongside you. We’re also shouting out a standout needle drop each episode, since the show’s soundtrack absolutely slaps.

From Ferris Beuller’s Day Off and Stir Crazy references to a SuperBob reunion and more, here are five things you may have missed in Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 4, “Greyhounds’ Day Off.”

1. In addition to welcoming back fan-favorite characters Trent Crimm (James Lance) and Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles), Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 4 introduced several fresh faces, including Zelda Southport (Tracey Ullman) and Roy’s knee doctor, Erin Beaumont (Laura Haddock). For those who don’t know, Goldstein and Haddock shared the screen before in SuperBob, a 2015 British superhero rom-com written by Goldstein and William Bridges. Goldstein played Robert Kenner (aka SuperBob), a superhero looking for love. And Haddock played his core crush, June. So if someone has to play a Roy Kent love interest who will likely delay his reunion with Keeley, we’re at least happy it’s someone who has real-life history with Goldstein!

   Before Roy reluctantly gets his knee looked at by Dr. Beaumont, he goes on several dates with women in hopes of winning Keeley back. And some of those actors have fun ties to Ted Lasso! Abigail Climer, who played Sasha on Ted Lasso, also played a yoga teacher on Sex Education, which starred Tanya Reynolds. Perdita Ogbourne, who played Emma on Ted Lasso, is credited as a Second AD on nine episodes of the show. And Jake Bailey, who played Ozzie — the main Pub Trivia boy — has credits on Tracey Breaks the News and Tracey Ullman’s Show. We’d bet even more Ted Lasso connections are hiding in plain sight!

2. Pop Culture Palooza

   Like Episode 3’s title “Richmond’s Got Talent” was a nod to Britain’s Got Talent, Episode 4’s “Greyhounds’ Day Off” is a nod to the beloved 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and a bunch of direct references and Easter eggs that call back to the film are sprinkled throughout. Up top, after Ted tells Alice Harry Potter was a blind spot because his son Henry (Grant Feely) was into Percy Jackson, Beard translates their conversation using helpful Ferris Bueller comparisons. Alice later reveals she watched the movie three times. When the Lady Greyhounds go to jail, Yellow’s “Oh Yeah” from the movie plays. Beard comes out of his catatonic state and says, “Ted Lasso, you’re my hero,” just like Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) did with Ferris in the film. And more!

   In the pub, Beard makes direct references to Mean Girls, Heathers, and The Lost Boys. Trivia names “If I Were A Richmond” and “There Will Be Brains” are clever nods to Fiddler on the Roof and There Will Be Blood. Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” is mentioned in trivia, and Carroll also wrote the previously referenced Alice in Wonderland. Lots of viewers felt the bar fight scene was very Chak De! India or The Replacements-coded. We get an all-female Glengarry Glen Ross shoutout. Ted references Miami Vice and Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” in jail. And as Ted and Beard walk out of prison, they reenact Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor’s “We bad” strut from the 1980 comedy Stir Crazy. What else did you catch?

3. Ted Lasso‘s Taylor Swift Era

   In Ted Lasso‘s Season 4 Kansas City-set premiere, owner Dazzle Moi owner, Tammy Dineen, told Rebecca and Keeley, “Luckily, a couple of summers ago, when Taylor Swift was performing in town, one of her backup singers, a windless angel of color, she floated in, bought an outfit, posted it on her Insta. We’ve been popping and hopping, and gals have been shopping ever since. Women helping women, am I right?”

   Two episodes later, we get two more references from Certified Swiftie Ted Lasso. “Sorry, I’m a little hard of hearing ever since I went to the Eras Tour and sat next to a group of overzealous girl dads,” he tells the Lady Greyhounds in the locker room. Later on, he tries to quiet them down by shouting, “Y’all sound like a bunch of overzealous girl dads fighting over friendship bracelets!” Considering Girl Dad Jason Sudeikis is friends with Swift and also attended her historic Kansas City Eras Tour show in 2023, the references make perfect sense. But considering Sudeikis, Swift, and Travis Kelce/The Kansas City Chiefs are so tight, could the relationships lead to something more than Season 4 references and brand collabs? Fans are hopeful for a Taylor Swift cameo, and ever since she appeared on New Girl, my TSwift TV motto is Never Say Never.

4. What Ever Happened To Jane And Beard?

   Before Pub Trivia ends, Beard heads to the bathroom where he finds a downright terrifying reminder of his ex, Jane Payne (Phoebe Walsh), in the form of a poster for her one-woman show, titled “What Ever Happened To The Baby, Jane?” The show’s name is a nod to the classic 1962 psychological horror film starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, and it also appears to confirm that whatever led to Jane and Beard’s mysterious breakup involved a baby. Many fans thought Jane was pregnant during her and Beard’s brief wedding scene in Season 3’s finale. And some noted that he was reading The Time Traveler’s Wife, which featured a woman having multiple miscarriages.

   “The moment he sees that poster, he knows everything that this show is going to be, basically, and he knows she’s going to be pitching her side of things,” Hunt told TVLine. “And he doesn’t know how much she’s going to exaggerate things, which I think she does. We don’t quite prove that, but I do think that’s the case. I think we thought that in the writers’ room as well… He both knows exactly what it’s going to be, but within the framework of her being so unpredictable, he has no idea how far she might go — and that notion is terrifying.”

5. After Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 2 premiered, I went long about why the song subtly playing in the background of Roy and Keeley’s hot as hell locker room scene secured their endgame. And wouldn’t you know it? When they’re discussing the idea of dating again and maintaining sexy eye contact in Episode 4, the RoyKeeley Endgame Anthem returns.

   Though the hopeful instrumentals that play could easily be mistaken as part of Ted Lasso‘s score, the music marks the start of “When I Get My Hands On You” by The New Basement Tapes. And that’s huge, because of the lyrics Ted Lasso doesn’t let us hear. “When I come home to you/Hold you in my arms all night,” “When I get my hands on you/Gonna make you marry me,” and “Everywhere on earth you go/You’re gonna have me as your man,” tell a story of someone’s intense love, passion, and devotion for another. As Marcus Mumford’s raw, romantic, downright dreamy vocals sing the words, it’s hard not to swoon — especially when thinking of the song in the context of Roy and Keeley. And as a hardcore fan of Bill Lawrence shows, I’m well aware that Ted Lasso music supervisors Tony Von Pervieux and Christa Miller know ball. So the song is surely sending a message.

   In this episode, I choose to believe that message is “Even though Roy is quite literally dating multiple women and potentially crushing on his hot knee doctor, it’s okay! We’re still getting RoyKeeley endgame eventually!” I mean, Higgins is standing between them holding a book like he’s about to officiate their wedding — not to mention, Higgins’ son is a priest!

Season 4, Episode 4’s Winning Needle Drop: “U.N.I.T.Y.” by Queen Latifah

After Ted Lasso Season 4 brought the Lady Greyhounds together as a team, I can think of no needle drop more perfect than Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” In Episode 3, we also heard her song “Ladies First,” so long live The Queen, and we hope we haven’t heard the last of her absolute jams on Ted Lasso.
