Ravens kicker Tyler Loop’s job in question after rough camp – and John Harbaugh could lend a hand
The final image of John Harbaugh as Ravens head coach was him consoling Tyler Loop after the kicker missed a field goal that would have clinched a playoff berth.
Well, Loop is still struggling, fed-up Ravens fans are booing and Harbaugh’s Giants could have the answer to the frustrations if the teams want to make a second trade this weekend.
Harbaugh announced Friday that undrafted rookie Dominic Zvada won the Giants’ preseason kicking competition but advocated for Ben Sauls to land with one of the NFL’s other 31 teams based on his own strong summer.
“I would say Ben also won a job,” said Harbaugh, whose background is in special teams.
“He should be kicking in the National Football League based on the fact that if we didn’t have Dominic, then Ben would have been the guy. So, I thought he had a great camp as well.”
The Giants haven’t cut Sauls, who went 8-for-8 on field goals and 7-for-7 on PATs late last season.
Perhaps the plan is to try to get a trade return – in the form of a draft pick of a backup defensive tackle – for Sauls before Sunday’s 6 p.m. deadline to cut the roster from 91 players to 53.
The Giants just traded a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Ravens for seventh-round pick C.J. Okoye.
Loop missed wide left on attempts from 51 and 58 yards Friday against the Commanders.
He finished 5-of-8 in the preseason.
“You want to see makes in games,” head coach Jesse Minter said. “And so, it’s something we’ll continue to look at. We’ll continue to look at what the best situation is there. He has had a good camp overall, but again, it comes down to making the kicks and the pressure situations in the game.”
If the Ravens are interested in Sauls, they could have competition from the Jets, who can’t be confident in Jason Sanders after his uninspiring summer concluded with a missed PAT and a well-short missed field goal against the Giants.
The Jets already cut Cade York, who lost out to Sanders.
