Giants cut Braxton Berrios — for now
The Giants cut Braxton Berrios … for now.
Taking advantage of a loophole to manipulate the cut from 91 to 53 players, the Giants cut Berrios with an understanding that he will be re-signed before Week 1, according to ESPN.
Because vested veterans like Berrios do not have to pass through waivers, the Giants and the eighth-year receiver can reach a handshake agreement that he won’t sign elsewhere as they go through roster gymnastics to keep another player who might have missed the cut and been subject to waivers.
It is unclear whether Berrios will be re-signed directly to the 53-man roster or to the practice squad with the promise to be one of the three game-day elevations in Week 1.
Berrios is one of the Giants’ top-six receivers — even though he lost a fumble in the red zone against the Jets — and their primary kickoff and punt returner.
He signed a one-year minimum contract out of a tryout in May.
Of course, Berrios is famous to an entirely non-NFL audience as a boyfriend. He dated models and viral social-media stars Sophia Culpo — Christian McCaffrey’s sister-in-law — and Alix Earle before reportedly entering into a relationship with model Hollie Ford.
