Mets gift Daniil Medvedev 300 pieces of chewing gum after viral US Open moment
Daniil Medvedev blamed watching too much baseball as the reason he went through a dozen pieces of gum during changeovers in his first-round win over Hugo Gaston at the U.S. Open on Sunday.
On Monday, the Mets gave the 30-year-old Medvedev another reason to keep an eye on America’s pastime. The MLB club, located right next door to the U.S. Open grounds, sent the tennis star a massive bucket of 300 pieces of Double Bubble chewing gum.
The tournament’s official X account posted a video of Medvedev receiving the gift from the Mets, which included a short note from the team wishing him luck in the second round.
“Bubble gum! No way,” he said with a laugh.
The 2021 U.S. Open winner noted that the 300 pieces of bubble gum would be “enough for the whole tournament even if I go all the way.”
“It does seem too sweet, I have to say. I’ll try it,” Medvedev added.
The Mets also gifted him a hat and a Mr. Met bobblehead.
Medvedev’s love of chewing gum came to light on Sunday during his first-round match when cameras spotted that he had gone through 12 pieces during the course of his 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win.
Afterward, when asked about all the gum he had gone through, Medvedev explained that his mouth had been very dry.
“Water was not helping, so the only solution was chewing gum,” he said. “And I probably watch too much baseball, because for whatever reason, they all chew chewing gum.”
Medvedev will face American Sebastian Gorzny on Wednesday in the second round, and how much gum the 30-year-old goes through will now surely be something fans are watching through the rest of the tournament.
He was knocked out of the tournament in the first round last year and is looking for redemption after winning it all five years ago at Flushing Meadows.
