There are many problems behind the Dodgers’ recent offensive struggles.

But on Tuesday, they added a couple of potentially impactful solutions back into the mix.

After missing almost three months with an inflamed disc in his neck, catcher Will Smith was activated off the injured list in what the team hopes will be a boon to its offense, receiving a long-awaited reinforcement in the form of the three-time All-Star backstop.

In a surprise move, backup catcher Dalton Rushing was also activated off the injured list, returning sooner than expected from a slight tear in his elbow ligament that will likely limit him to only pinch-hitting duties for the foreseeable future.

The moves came on the day MLB rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players at the start of September. In other roster moves, the Dodgers called up infielder Alex Freeland, activated pitcher Justin Wrobleski from the injured, optioned outfielder Alek Thomas to the minors and designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment.

Smith’s return is the biggest development. He had been out since the first week of June, after what was initially believed to be a minor neck injury turned into a prolonged stint on the 60-day IL.

His activation should restore stability to the team’s unsettled catching situation, which has seen five other catchers cycle through the roster over the course of his absence.

Rushing, meanwhile, rejoins the Dodgers a little over a month after suffering his elbow injury –– coming back from the IL without even a minor-league rehab assignment.

His chances of being able to catch again this season remain in doubt, as he progresses through a throwing program. But he can give the Dodgers a sorely-needed left-handed bat off the bench, something they’ve been missing during their recent struggles at the plate.

The moves will give the Dodgers’ roster a new look for the final stretch of the regular season.

Smith will be backed up behind the plate by Hunter Feduccia. Freeland’s promotion could allow the team to use Tommy Edman (who has primarily been at second base) in the outfield as they search for more production from that position group.

Smith was having a relatively down season before getting hurt. In his first 52 games this year, he had hit just .249 with a career-low .720 OPS.

However, replacing him proved to be an ongoing challenge, especially once Rushing went down days before the trade deadline.

After brief cameos for Chuckie Robinson and Eliezer Alfonzo, the Dodgers re-acquired familiar faces in Feduccia and Rortvedt to bolster their options at the position.

Still, neither player replicated the presence that Smith has provided during his decorated eight-year career in the majors.

Though Feduccia has minor-league options, he showed enough over the last month to stay on the big-league roster, hitting .262 in 20 games. Rortvedt, who did not have any minor-league options remaining, was DFA’d after batting just .185. He will now be subject to waivers, but could stay in the organization if he goes unclaimed.

Smith will likely return to the top half of the Dodgers’ lineup, which has struggled to replace the void created by Andy Pages’ broken hand.

Edman’s switch-hitting versatility also gives the club some options to explore, either in center field to help compensate for the loss of Pages (who is expected to return near the end of the regular season) or in left field as a potential left-handed platoon pairing with Teoscar Hernández (Hernández has struggled against right-handed pitching this year, while Edman has been better while hitting from the left side).

The Dodgers will be counting on the shake-up to spur an offense that scored the fifth-fewest runs in the majors during a 13-14 slump in August.
