How much losing is enough?

How many (years of) abysmal performances must accrue before people say no more?

And what’s the topic here: the Los Angeles Angels, or the state of California?

Turns out it’s both.

News this week that the hapless Arte Moreno will sell the team he’s driven into the ground drew more applause than a (rare) win at Angel Stadium. 

The Halos have an 11-season losing streak, have whiffed on making the postseason since 2014, and as of this writing hold a 53-86 record in 2026 –– a winning percentage of just .381.

And yet California’s success rate is even worse.

State residents endure a long list of crises that fester and deepen from one season to the next.

To wit: entrenched homelessness; lack of affordability; shortages of housing, water, energy and road capacity; often-dismal public schools; unchecked spending; overtaxation; woeful underperformance by state government; rampant fraud; widespread crime; union and other special-interest capture of Sacramento; and more.

Talk about a long losing streak.

Both the state and the team formerly known as the California Angels are failing. Both need a turnaround. What better time than now?

The state and the Angels both have resources, star power and a rich history –– yet consistently (way) underperform. 

The Angels had Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani on the same team for years, but batted .000 on winning seasons. California has surf, sun, Hollywood and Silicon Valley –– yet can’t curb homelessness, quell fraud or lay an inch of high-speed rail track in two decades.

In fact: Is either one even trying to perform anymore? 

Moreno egregiously claimed in February that winning was not among the Top 5 priorities of Angels fans.

Meanwhile, the gallivanting Gov. Gavin Newsom routinely skips town to campaign for the presidency; just this week, he’s touring Alabama and the Carolinas when he could be home addressing state crises (see above).

Perhaps worst of all: Both have accepted failure as the norm. 

The Angels tinker and sputter and cycle through coaches and managers; the state and some local governments in California have all but given up on problem-solving. In its place, elected officials placate supporters and donors like unions and nonprofits whose business models depend on non-solutions so they can fleece taxpayers ad infinitum.

Will the public ever come first?

Come January, the Angels will operate under new ownership –– and the state will have a new governor.

Which holds more promise?
