Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Rams released their depth chart for the upcoming season and have veteran quarterback Stetson Bennett as the team’s backup quarterback.

While the depth chart has him as the backup, head coach Sean McVay would tell you otherwise, as he believes Bennett and rookie quarterback Ty Simpson are both the backups.

“I look at it as you like both of those are going to play,” McVay said on Friday. “But you saw we listed Stetson as the two, Ty as the three. But I look at it as 2A and 2B.”

In the past, McVay has been clear when talking about the depth chart, as Jimmy Garoppolo was listed as the Rams’ backup quarterback over the last two seasons, over Bennett, who spent last season serving as the team’s emergency quarterback.

With McVay calling Simpson quarterback “2B,” it’s likely that he is trying to protect the rookie quarterback from having to play immediately, as the team seems more focused on his long-term development than his immediate impact.

Simpson will likely serve as the team’s emergency quarterback for the remainder of the season — unless something serious were to happen to reigning MVP Matthew Stafford.

“I’ll tell you when I decide who is going to be the actual two in the game,” McVay said. “I’ve talked to the players about, but that’s something that they’re both going to continue to train regardless of who it ends up being up and who is the emergency third.”

During the preseason, Simpson left a strong first impression on McVay and the Rams, as he completed 47 of 60 passes for 382 yards, 3 touchdowns, while avoiding throwing any interceptions or taking any sacks.
