‘Moana’ 2026 Comes to Digital, But When Will the Live Action ‘Moana’ Movie Be Streaming on Disney+?

If that live-action sea has been calling to you, then good news: the live-action Moana movie is coming to digital platforms to buy and rent tomorrow.

Directed by Thomas Kail (a theater director known for his collabs with Moana composer Lin-Manuel Miranda), with a screenplay written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, the 2026 Moana movie stars Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia in her feature film debut. That’s a tough break for Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 animated film, but at least they gave her an “executive producer” title on the live-action film in consolation.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson returned to his role as Maui, the braggadocios demi-god who accompanies Moana on her journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti, and save her people. The live-action Moana also stars Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams, and the voice of Jemaine Clement. Critics more or less panned the film, calling it “bland” and “a generic beat-for-beat remake.” But hey, at least we know the songs are good.

That said, before you spend $30 to watch the new Moana movie at home, you should know we expect to see the live-action Moana movie on Disney+ before the end of the year.

The live action Moana is not yet streaming on any subscription streaming services, but because it is a Disney movie, we do expect to see Moana 2026 streaming on Disney+ soon.

Disney+ offers a number of subscription options, so you can find the one that works for you. With ads, a subscription costs $11.99/month; without ads, it’s $18.99/month or $189.99/year.

There are also Disney+ bundles with Hulu, HBO Max, and ESPN+, so you can subscribe to up to three services at once and save over 40% every month. The bundles are available in a few different configurations, starting at $11.99/month for Disney+ and Hulu with ads, and going up to $32.99/month for Disney+, Hulu, and Max ad-free.

When is the live action Moana movie coming to Disney Plus?

You might see the live action Moana movie streaming on Disney+ around mid October 2026.

The Moana live action Disney+ release date has not yet been announced, we can make an educated guess as to when the movie will be streaming based on previous Disney releases.

One recent Disney movie, Toy Story 5, was released on premium video-on-demand about two months after opening in theaters, and will begin streaming on Disney+ a little over three months after opening in theaters. If Moana follows a similar release strategy, you may see the live action Moana movie streaming on Disney+ around mid-October 2026.

But this is all speculation. The streaming release of Disney movies varies by title. For now, if you want to watch Moana 2026 at home, you can buy or rent a digital copy of the movie.
