Netflix continues to delve into the business of micro-dramas, where episodes are only a few minutes long. It’s newest is a Colombian series named Stolen Heartbeats, which can be classified as a “medical-supernatural” dama.

Opening Shot: A woman is brought to an emergency room, gets her heart shocked back into rhythm, and then we see her lying in a coma in the ICU.

The Gist:  Rafael (Jerónimo Cantillo), the nurse who brought in the woman, Anabel (Rami Herrera), in the ambulance, is tending to her in the ICU when he hears a woman screaming for help. He turns around and it’s Anabel, in her hospital gown. Apparently, Rafael is the only one who can see or hear her, and given his mental health struggles in the past, he wonders if what he’s seeing is real.

Anabel assures him it’s real, and she tells him that someone at the hospital — a cardiologist and a nurse with a tattoo — have been drugging her, hoping she stays in the coma and her father and stepmother take her off life support. The goal is to sell the heart for $500,000 to a wealthy patient who needs a transplant.

Rafael springs into action, and we eventually see how Anabel landed in the hospital, after the car she was riding in exploded. In the meantime, Carlos (Julian Trujillo), the head of cardiology, wants to go to extreme measures to save Anabel. Despite being married to Lucia (Giulia Mantovani), Anabel’s stepsister, he considers Anabel the love of his life.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Stolen Heartbeats (Original title: En Coma) is a micro-drama, with episodes running anywhere between 3 and 5 minutes (though the actual content is more like between 1 and 3 minutes per). It reminds us of the micro-series Between Father And Son.

Our Take: There’s a lot about Stolen Heartbeats that’s silly, starting with the idea of Anabel being able to communicate with Rafael while she’s in a coma. The only bits of backstory we get about the two main characters is that Anabel was a hotel executive who liked her job and slept with Carlos, and that Rafael was hospitalized for mental health issues.

With that little background info, all we have is the story. And that story moves fast and is muddled as hell. The scheme to steal a heart for a rich patient didn’t necessarily target Anabel, as we find out when Carlos is shown to be a part of that scheme. Others are also shown to be in on it, but without much in the way of explanation.

Things only get crazier from there, with love triangles, murder attempts, and Anabel falling in love with Rafael while she’s in that coma. And that’s only while she’s in the hospital; there is a point during the first 31 episodes (19 more are coming on September 18) where an attempt is made to revive her. Let’s just say the reasoning behind the procedure isn’t in any medical journals we know of.

Performance Worth Watching: Rami Herrera, who plays Anabel, gets to have scenes where she’s being sexy, where she’s in love, and where she’s lying in a coma. She displays quite a range.

Sex And Skin: There’s some medical nudity, like during CPR, but that’s about it.

Parting Shot: Anabel screams at Rafael, the lights in the hallway go out, and both fall to the ground.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Stolen Heartbeats is silly as hell, and the micro-drama format leads to a disjoined format without much room for character exploration. But it’s not like the episodes will take up that much of your time, right?
