History is on the line in Flushing this afternoon.

The US Open men’s championship is today, Sept. 13, and Ben Shelton is looking to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam in 23 years and the first Black men’s U.S. Open title-winner since 1968.

To do so, he’ll have to take down Alexander Zverev.

Shelton, the No. 8 seed, advanced into his first career US Open final by defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals on Friday. He also outlasted reigning US Open champ Carlos Alcaraz in a wild quarterfinal that began on the evening of Sept. 8 and ended at 3:33 a.m. ET on Sept. 9.

Zverev, who won his maiden Grand Slam earlier this year at the French Open, came into the US Open as the No. 1 seed. Zverev won his semifinal against unseeded Karen Khachanov in straight sets to reach his second career US Open final.

“Hopefully, I can make the American dream not come true on Sunday,” Zverev said.

Shelton and Zverev have faced off five times in the past, though none of those meetings were during one of the four tennis majors. Zverev won all five matches.
