HBO‘s Lanterns is a gritty new take on the Green Lantern comic books. Long-time Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) has been tasked with training his “backup,” John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), whom he naturally intuits is his replacement. When Hal gets a mysterious message from his “Halogram,” a holographic version of himself, to investigate Rushville, he heads there and jumps into the middle of a murder mystery. While at first it appears strange that aliens were gunned down during a high school football game, things get weirder when John learns that a Manhunter is hiding in the rural American town.

Lanterns dropped a doozy of a twist last week, revealing that the Manhunter lurking in Rushville was none other than the beguiling Zoe (Poorna Jagannathan)! You know, the hot married lady that John Stewart has been hooking up with this whole time! So now that Hal Jordan and John Stewart know what they’re up against, how will they neutralize the threat? Will they be able to finally work together? And why does Hal keep setting John up to magically survive car crashes?
