Herbert became the fourth-fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 25,000 career-yards, trailing Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford and Dan Marino. Herbert completed the milestone in 96 games. It took Marino 92 matchups and Stafford 90.

Mahomes reached 25,000 career yards the fastest out of any NFL quarterback as he got there in 83 games.

There have been high hopes for Herbert since the Chargers selected him sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Oregon product, however, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in the eyes of many football fans.

The Chargers are still searching for their first playoff win with Herbert at the helm, which makes the 2026 season all the more important for the team and their quarterback’s legacy.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh believes Herbert will be the greatest ever once his career concludes.

“Allow me to call my shot, like Babe Ruth pointing his bat over to centerfield: Justin Herbert, when it’s all said and done, when his career comes to an end, I predict he will be known as the greatest, best ever to play the position of quarterback,” Harbaugh said.

“When it’s all said and done, and his career is finished, we’re going to look back and say, ‘Yep, that’s the best that ever did it.’”

In Week 1, Herbert’s feat added another impressive milestone to his resume. But he’ll need to have more than 25,000 career-yards to get the G.O.A.T label, especially after the Chargers’ uninspiring loss to Arizona.
