Ballroom is back, baby!

Nearly a year after crowning Robert Irwin and partner Witney Carson as the champs of Season 34, Dancing With the Stars Season 35 is here to raise the roof (and the stakes) with 16 15 couples who are vying for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

DECIDER was inside the ballroom Tuesday night to watch the first eight performances of the season — as well as the sad first elimination of Season 35 — and there are so many moments that the cameras and microphones didn’t manage to catch while live on ABC and Hulu.

From shocking (and not-so shocking) cast reunions to heart-pounding pre-dance moments, we witnessed some big things while watching in the audience with the fans. Luckily for you, we’re here to give you a short recap of what you may have missed while watching at home and what you may want to look out for ahead of Night Two.

1. Taylor Hanson Fans Go WILD Inside the Ballroom

   To any non-believers, naysayers, or those who simply do not know who Taylor Hanson is, you better believe that this man is going to be on your TV screens for a little while. A member of the one-hit wonder group Hanson — which he played in along with brothers Isaac and Zac — Taylor has a reputation for being a heartthrob among millennials, who have declared that they “ride at dawn” for him this season. Online, some fans are even speculating that the “Fan-sons” are the ones who caused voting on ABC to crash mid-premiere. Inside the ballroom, while many of the couples received whoops and cheers, no dancer, pro, nor judge came close to the decibel level at which Taylor’s supporters showed their support for him.

   Watch out, Dancing With the Stars fans, between Carrie-Ann Inaba saying his quickstep would have been Len Goodman-approved, and the other judges saying he has potential to be a contender, we think this is one contestant who cannot be overlooked as a Mirrorball Trophy hopeful this season.

2. Grey’s Anatomy Family In the House For Harry Shum Jr.

   Glee and Crazy Rich Asians star Harry Shum Jr. may have had his real family in the house on Monday night as he and partner Jenna Johnson took the dance floor together for their first cha-cha, but he also had the support of his Grey’s Anatomy co-stars, Adelaide Kane, Trevor Jackson, and Chris Carmack. Seated just in front of the band on the right side of the stage, the trio of actors hung out with Harry’s wife, Shelby Rabara, and their seven-year-old daughter Xia, who was adorably dressed in flapper attire.

   Pair Monday night’s appearance from the Grey’s fam with James Pickens Jr. and Alexis Floyd turning up at the DWTS premiere party in Hollywood on September 10, and you’ve got a true television family who cannot wait to see what dances Harry and Jenna bring to screens throughout the season.

3. Demi Engemann and Mikayla Matthews: Out Of MomTok But In the Ballroom

   While Demi Engemann — who left The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives in the middle of Season 4 — may be out of MomTok permanently, she did return to the Disney family briefly on Monday alongside SLOMW stars Mayci Neeley and Mikayla Matthews, who showed up to support Conner and Whitney Leavitt. Fans may not have seen them seated together inside the ballroom as ABC didn’t shout out their appearance as in Season 34, but social media users were tipped off that they would be around after appearing alongside Whitney in a TikTok. And since Mikayla has recently announced her own departure from the show and Mayci seems to be on the fence about returning, could we maybe see a new MomTok being formed?

4. Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas Have a Season 34 Reunion

   Before the cameras began rolling Monday night, Whitney Leavitt and Season 34 partner Mark Ballas spotted each other from across the room and adorably jumped into each other’s arms. The duo took 6th place last season but later went on to star alongside each other in Chicago the Musical on Broadway earlier this year, with Whitney playing Roxie Hart and Ballas playing Billy Flynn.

   After Conner Leavitt’s tearful elimination, we can only expect the Leavitt clan to throw their support behind Mark and his new partner, Maura Higgins, who make their ballroom debut during the second night of the Dancing With the Stars Season 35 premiere.

5. Ezra Frech Fixes His Prosthetic Seconds Before Dancing

   Fans watched in awe Monday as Paralympian gold medalist Ezra Frech and his Season 35 partner Daniella Karagach tangoed their way to a score of 20 out of 30 for the first week. In his package, the above-the-knee amputee explained just how volatile working on his prosthetic could be and how little control he actually has over the instrument, which could fly off (and has before!) at any second.

   What fans at home didn’t see while his introductory package was rolling was Ezra fixing and adjusting his left leg mere seconds before wowing the audience to “Since You Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson. Thankfully, everything went according to plan and despite having little control over his leg, Ezra was able to take the lead — both in the dance and near the top of the scoreboard — as well as establish himself as an early frontrunner of Season 35.

   “For the first time in my life while seeing Daniella dance with a partner, i watched the person she was dancing with instead of having my eyes glued on her the entire time. can’t wait to see ezra’s journey on this show,” one YouTube commenter even wrote.
