49ers could reunite with Jake Moody as Eddy Piñeiro is questionable for Week 2

The 49ers are signing a kicker to the practice squad in case Eddy Piñeiro isn’t available for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins.

Piñeiro is listed as questionable with an illness and has missed three straight practices. San Francisco will bring in two kickers for a tryout Saturday, and one could be free agent Jake Moody.

“There’s two guys we’re deciding on but not sure which one,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday.

The 49ers did not disclose who the two candidates were.

Moody was recently released by the Ravens. The 26-year-old is by no means a 49ers fan favorite after he experienced several low moments with the team.

San Francisco selected Moody in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He served as the team’s primary kicker until September 2025, when the 49ers waived and replaced Moody with Piñeiro.

Since he was cut by San Francisco, Moody made brief stints with the Bears and Commanders last season. Tyler Loop beat him out for the kicker job in Baltimore.

During his rookie season in 2023, Moody went 21-of-25 on field goals (84%) and 60-of-61 on extra points (98.4%). The Michigan product was steady, though he missed a few short attempts.

In 2024, Moody struggled, and injuries played a role. He finished the season 24-of-34 on field goals (70.6%) over 14 games.

Moody suffered a high ankle sprain while trying to make a tackle against the Cardinals in October, which derailed his momentum. Before the injury, he was 13-of-14 (92.9%).

After his return from injury, Moody hit just 11-of-20 (55.0%). It appears as though the ankle injury disrupted his mechanics and confidence down the stretch of the 2024 campaign.

Then in 2025, after going 1-of-3 to start the season, the 49ers cut ties with Moody.

It appears he may have another chance at redeeming himself to the fan base if Piñeiro can’t go Sunday and the 49ers end up signing Moody.
