The Cleveland Browns have tough decisions to make soon at quarterback. 

Deshaun Watson is getting the nod for their Week 2 matchup against the Buccaneers.

After that, the team will revisit the starting quarterback role ahead of their Week 3 home opener versus Carolina.

The competition once again includes second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Watson beat out Sanders in camp while returning from a season-ending Achilles injury.

Watson has had a rough return after a preseason that saw him receive boos from fans and countless bad decisions with the ball in his hands. He started Week 1 in Jacksonville, where he threw an interception to Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun on his third pass of the afternoon.

The 31-year-old finished the game completing 16-of-22 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown while getting sacked five times in the Browns’ 34-10 loss against the Jaguars.

With those in Brown’s facilities frustrated with how the offense operated. New head coach Todd Monken stood in solidarity with Watson as the starter.

“I anticipate Deshaun will be our starter,” said Monken when reporters asked how the locker room felt about the decision. “To be honest… they don’t have a choice. This isn’t a debate… I love our guys. But the moment we get into that… we’ve lost sight of the target.”

After double-dipping for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft and drafting rookie Taylen Green in the sixth round this year.

Cleveland will have the opportunity to do so again if nobody in the room can separate themselves from the rest.

The Browns will have multiple first-round picks in 2027, with a class that’s loaded with talent at the position.

With no firm decision being set for Week 3, Watson might be arriving at one of his last chances to start in Cleveland. It all depends on how he can perform against the Bucs this Sunday.
