The 49ers selected Dante Pettis in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Eight years later, the wide receiver is returning to where his NFL journey started: San Francisco.

Pettis, who turns 31 next month, is signing with the 49ers to fill a depth chart spot to an ailing wide receiver room. He won’t be a top wide receiver for the team, but he brings experience with head coach Kyle Shanahan’s sytem.

The 49ers hosted Pettis as well as eight other players for a tryout Tuesday. It appears the former second round pick’s work out went well as he ends the day with a 49ers deal.

San Francisco has an open spot on its practice squad, which will likely be filled by Pettis once the signing is made official.

Pettis spent the first two seasons of his NFL career in the Bay Area, but never played a full season. In 2020, the 49ers waived the wideout and he spent the remainder of the year with the Giants.

Since then, he’s made stints with the Bears and Saints. Pettis played 16 games in New Orleans across two seasons, tallying 227 total yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers injuries to its wide receiver corps has been unrelenting this season, thus additions like Pettis have been made as a depth move.
