Java Factory is turning ice cream truck treats into coffee

Making coffee taste like dessert is easy enough with heaps of sugar and cream. Capturing that sweetness without the sugar is the hard part.

Rather than shy away from the challenge, Java Factory is running with it in its Flavor 52 campaign. The flavored-coffee brand, known for its imaginative dual-flavor blends and unexpected flavor combinations, is releasing a new flavor each week for a year, centered around six different themed seasons. In addition to its current lineup of popular flavors, including French Toast, S’Mores, Choconut, Pistachy-Ohhh!, PB&J, Blueberry Shortcake, and highly caffeinated favorites such as Da Bomb and Smooth Caffeinator, Java Factory is creating 52 new coffees that deliver on the promise of their names.

The theme of season 2 is Ice Cream Truck. The season features real licensed collaborations with actual ice cream brands. The collaborators are:

  • Creamsicle
  • Breyers
  • Klondike
  • Popsicle
  • Good Humor

Not only is Java Factory creating coffee flavors inspired by classic ice cream brands, but it’s actually evoking the nostalgia that comes from childhood memories of following around the ice cream truck. How, exactly? Through a collaboration with Flavor & Fragrance Specialties (FFS), a division of Lucta. The collaboration sees FFS flavor specialists working alongside the Java Factory team in its roasting facility as they work to develop and create new flavor concepts.

“We’ve watched categories like ice cream, snacks and candy reinvent themselves year after year through limited-edition flavors, collaborations and cultural moments,” says Steven Schrieber, President of Java Factory. “Coffee has largely stood still. Flavor 52 is our belief that flavored coffee can be just as creative, collectible, and exciting as any category in food.”

When it comes to creating coffee flavors that work, the process is easier said than done. Take a flavor like Creamsicle, which most people are familiar with. The dessert works because of the unique combination of bright orange, creamy vanilla, and cold sweetness.

Each flavor is meant to evoke the experience of a different ice cream treat in a cup of black coffee. Java Factory

But the end result is much more than just the sum of its parts. Rather than simply add flavor to their coffee, Java Factory’s goal is to deliver a fully designed sensory experience, with a balance of aroma, taste, and nostalgia that tells a story with every cup. When someone sits down with a freshly brewed cup of Creamsicle coffee, the company’s hope is that they’ll be transported straight back to that afternoon from childhood.

Running now through October 19th, Season 2 features nine weeks of flavors, including Creamsicle, Breyers Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Sticky Situation, Klondike, Raspberry Italian Ice, Popsicle Firecracker, Good Humor Chocolate Éclair, Good Humor Toasted Almond, and a Mystery Halloween Flavor. Sticky Situation and Raspberry Italian Ice are Java Factory’s own creations. The season then moves into Season 3: Sweater Weather.

The flavors roll out every Monday over a nine-week period, ending with a special Mystery Halloween flavor. Java Factory

The campaign also supports Java Factory’s effort to establish a Guinness World Records title for the most unique coffee flavors launched by a coffee brand within a single year. Flavor 52 concludes at the 2027 Summer Fancy Food Show with the unveiling of the campaign’s final flavor release.

Consumer participation is at the heart of Java Factory’s campaign, as they encourage coffee lovers to try each new flavor and vote on which ones deserve to stick around. Whether people try individual flavors, subscribe season to season, or sign up for all 52 flavors, they can rank how successful each coffee flavor is at capturing the whole experience of a favorite childhood dessert.
