Amazon redesigned the Kindle — but this $35 accessory may steal the show
As a longtime Kindle user, quite literally since the first generation, I’m always excited when there’s a new Kindle launch.
I’m an author myself and an avid reader, and my current Kindle Colorsoft has hundreds of books loaded onto it. That said, even though my Kindles have truly survived the test of time (my oldest is close to 20 years old), I’m always excited when Amazon releases a new iteration.
Today, the brand launched a completely redesigned Kindle family, starting with a brand-new 6-inch Kindle, a compact, pocketable device that feels built for people like me who are always on the go.
Kindle (6-inch)
The new Kindle has a flush-front display and a slimmer design, with the color of the device wrapping from front to back. The standard 16GB model comes in ube, a rich purple, and graphite, a classic gray, while a new 32GB aluminum version comes in alpine sky and seaglass green.
This is the Kindle for you if you need something even more portable than the Paperwhite. It offers up to six weeks of battery life and Amazon says books open 30% faster than on the previous release. Plus, for the first time, the 6-inch Kindle is available with an aluminum back, giving the device a slightly more premium feel without sacrificing its pocket-sized design.
The standard Kindle starts at $149.99 and is available beginning today.
Amazon also announced another launch today that, trust me, BookTok is going to go crazy for: the Kindle Click.

The Kindle Click is a compact Bluetooth page-turning remote ideal for reading under the covers, on a treadmill or with your Kindle propped up on a tray table during a flight. If you’ve ever struggled from underneath a blanket just to turn a page, you probably already understand the appeal.
It’s compatible with all of Amazon’s new Kindle devices, as well as any Kindle model from 2024 or later. The Kindle Click will be available October 28.
And the Kindle updates don’t stop there.
A new Kindle Paperwhite
Amazon is also rolling out an all-new Kindle Paperwhite, and somehow the already slim e-reader is getting even thinner and lighter.

The new Paperwhite has the largest display ever offered on a Kindle Paperwhite, according to Amazon, along with the highest contrast ratio yet. That means deeper blacks, crisp text and clearer images whether you’re reading outside in bright sunlight or under the covers at night.
It’s also waterproof, includes an adjustable warm light and offers up to 12 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
The standard Kindle Paperwhite comes with 16GB of storage in Graphite and starts at $199.99.
The $249.99 Signature Edition bumps storage up to 32GB and adds an aluminum rear housing, an auto-adjusting front light and another feature I’m particularly intrigued by: double tap to turn pages (the new Colorsoft has this too). It can also charge through Amazon’s new dock (more on this later) and comes in Graphite and Seaglass Green.
Kindle Colorsoft gets an upgrade, too
As a current Kindle Colorsoft user, this is naturally one of the launches I’m most interested in.

Amazon says the redesigned Colorsoft is built to deliver richer, more paper-like color without the harsh glare you’d get from reading on a traditional tablet — the Colorsoft has come a long way since its inital release a few years ago. The display uses nitride LEDs to increase brightness and enhance color without washing out finer details.
There’s also a newly redesigned display that brings color to the edge of the device, along with technology designed to improve contrast in both color and traditional black-and-white content.
The standard Kindle Colorsoft comes with 16GB of storage in Graphite and starts at $289.99.
The Colorsoft Signature Edition costs $319.99 and includes 32GB of storage, an aluminum housing, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turning and compatibility with Amazon’s new charging dock. It will be available in Graphite and Fig.
Kindle accessories are getting way better
Amazon isn’t just updating the Kindles themselves. The brand is also rolling out a lineup of accessories that address some very specific reader requests.
Along with the $35 Kindle Click, Amazon is launching a Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons built right into the magnetic case. The cover is compatible with both the Paperwhite and the Colorsoft.
There’s also a new Charging Dock (no release date as of yet) which we teased above. It’s designed to keep those same Signature Edition devices upright and charged, which could be especially convenient if you like keeping your Kindle beside your bed or on your desk.
Traditional Kindle covers are getting an upgrade, too, with options including knit fabric, plant-based leather and premium pebbled leather. Amazon is also offering slim magnetic covers specifically for Kindles with aluminum housings.
Amazon says preorders for the new Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft are beginning on a rolling basis, while the new 6-inch Kindle is available starting today.
As someone who has watched Kindle evolve from that chunky first-generation model to the Colorsoft I use today, there’s a lot here I want to get my hands on. But the Kindle Click and that cover with built-in page-turn buttons? Those may end up being the real BookTok stars of this launch.
