Onlookers spring into action to save fenced in tourist trapped by dangerous waves
October 2, 2026
A 61-year-old tourist was dramatically rescued after being trapped against a fence by strong ocean swells in Nassau, The Bahamas. The dangerous incident prompted quick action from beach vendors, local supporters, a member of parliament, and resort lifeguards who freed her during a harrowing three-minute ordeal. The fence was part of a controversial temporary barrier installed at Cabbage Beach for erosion control and restoration work. Following public outcry and safety concerns regarding restricted access, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources announced on September 28 that it is demanding the developer remove the fencing for failing to properly notify the public.
