Tony Romo was playing golf when news broke of CBS split
It turns out Tony Romo was a bit preoccupied when news of his official exit from CBS hit on Friday morning.
The now ex-NFL analyst was in the midst of a round of golf at the PGA Tour Q-School in Oklahoma when the split was announced.
As noted by Golf Magazine writer Dylan Dethier, Romo was tied for 46th on the leaderboard at the time, and needed to sneak into the top 37 to advance past the pre-qualifying round.
Halfway through the third round Friday afternoon, he was still hovering around 45th place with an eight-over 188.
Romo has long been an avid amateur golfer, winning the celebrity American Century Championship tournament in 2018.
On Wednesday, Romo was seen at The Club at Forest Ridge in Oklahoma, his first public appearance since his OWI arrest in July that led to his indefinite leave and subsequent parting of ways from CBS.
Romo previously participated in the Q-School qualifying in 2020 and 2021, alongside other PGA Tour appearances including the AT&T Byron Nelson.
The former Cowboys quarterback was leaving a round of golf when he was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated on July 23 in Wisconsin. He was subsequently placed on indefinite leave from CBS before their parting of ways was announced Friday.
Romo, who joined CBS after retiring from the NFL in 2017, was under a 10-year, $180 million extension signed in 2020 when he was arrested. He is expected to received a sizable chunk of the $72 million left on his deal from the network, according to The Athletic.
Former NFLer J.J. Watt will finish out the season as CBS’s primary analyst alongside Jim Nantz.
Romo pleaded no contest to the OWI charge, while three other charges were dismissed as part of an agreement with prosecutors. Romo posted a statement and apology last month, sharing his “over-reliance on alcohol” stemming from multiple back procedures he underwent while still playing.
