Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase expected to be OK after sudden collapse
Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase is expected to be okay.
Nakase was seen collapsing on the court during the fourth quarter of her team’s 77-73 victory against the Dallas Wings on Friday night.
Nakase, 46, was seen falling to her hands and knees while speaking with a referee during a timeout in the fourth quarter at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Nakase was immediately helped back up to her feet by others on the court and immediately walked back over towards the team’s bench while she was grabbing her head.
Once the game was concluded, assistant coach Kasib Powell addressed the media in her place and said Nakase was “fine.”
“Obviously it’s a quick turnaround. We play again on Sunday. She wouldn’t miss it for anything,” Powell said. “So I just wanted to start with that and say that she is fine.”
Powell went on to say that he wasn’t sure what happened and said it was “New to us.”
“We’re still trying to figure it out. We just know that we just seen her afterwards and she was fine, laughing, and in great spirits,” Powell said. “I think we’ll figure out more as we go.”
Powell added that during the final moments of the game, Nakase was still engaged in the game and was helping draw up plays.
“She was on the sideline; she drew the next play up. She was in the huddle, getting on them about getting the stop,” Powell said. “So she didn’t skip a beat at all. So we were just trying to keep our composure and just rally around each other and her.”
The Valkyries will take on the No.3 seed and the defending WNBA champions, the Las Vegas Aces, on Sunday. Powell said Nakase will be ready to coach.
