Deion Sanders rips into Colorado QB room after Zach Wilson’s brother struggles: ‘Disabling us’

Colorado enters its Week 5 bye still at square one at the quarterback position.

After a blowout 29-7 loss at home to No. 12 Texas Tech Saturday night, head coach Deion Sanders set his expectations for the quarterback room.

“That’s the position that’s somewhat disabling us and disarming us,” Sanders said. “Somebody’s got to step up and take hold of it and get it done.”

Sanders mentioned that Colorado (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) will consider all three rostered quarterbacks: Saturday’s junior starter Isaac Wilson, freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne and former four-star recruit Julian “JuJu” Lewis before the Buffs face No. 13 Utah on Oct. 17.

On Saturday, Wilson didn’t take full advantage of his first career start at Colorado. He completed 26 of 55 passes for 290 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. In three appearances, the younger brother of former first rounder Zach Wilson has completed just 56.3 percent of his passes.

Lewis saw his tenure as a starter put on pause as he was pulled at halftime during Colorado’s game against Baylor last weekend. The former four-star prospect has a 47.7 QBR with 733 passing yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions this season.

Sweetwyne has appeared in two games this season, going 8-for-12 for 42 passing yards.

The Buffaloes have seen five different quarterbacks in 13 months, an issue that has hindered this early portion of the season.

“We got one darn problem. You guys know darn well what that is. Let’s stop the foolishness. We’ve got to play better at one specific position. That’s it,” said Sanders.

Colorado has yet to score more than 14 points in a game against Power Four competition, and its 394.2 total yards per game ranks 14th of 16 teams in the Big 12.
