The surprising names Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis go by at school

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three children go by George Wales, Charlotte Wales and Louis Wales at school, according to Hello! magazine.

The royal siblings use the surname Wales as a nod to their parents’ titles, the Prince and Princess of Wales, which they were given after Queen Elizabeth II’s death in Sept. 2022.

Prince George, 13, is in his first year at Eton College — William’s alma mater — in Berkshire, England.

Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, attend Lambrook Prep School, where George was previously enrolled.

The trio used to be called George Cambridge, Charlotte Cambridge and Louis Cambridge in school before William and Middleton’s titles changed from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the Prince and Princess of Wales when King Charles acended the throne in 2022.

It’s tradition for members of the royal family to use their parents’ titles as their last names at school.

William, 44, and Prince Harry were called William Wales and Harry Wales when they were in school and in the military, given their father, King Charles, 77, was the Prince of Wales at the time.

Last month, William and Middleton, 44, accompanied their eldest child to his first day of school at Eton College.

George, who is as tall as his mother, matched his father in a black suit and a blue tie.

The teenager then changed into his school uniform, which included a black tailcoat, waistcoat, pinstriped pants and a white shirt with a stiff collar.

Middleton, meanwhile, wore an elegant forest green dress and held an umbrella as the family braved the rain upon arriving at the school.

William attended Eton College from 1995 to 2000. Harry went there from 1998 to 2003.

Eton College is an all-boys boarding school founded in 1440 and is the largest boarding school in England.

Following news of his school choice, royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told Page Six that George’s “biggest challenge won’t be academics or making friends,” but “balancing [his] privacy with the reality that every classmate has TikTok.”

“William and [his brother] Harry attended before social media transformed adolescence. George won’t have that luxury, ” she continued.

Additionally, Schofield told us that George is expected to have his own room, but he’ll still be “immersed in a social environment” and will likely join the athletics program.

Schofield also said George will have a leg up at the school since William is an Eton grad.

“William knows where the pressure points are. He understands the social dynamics, the academic expectations and the emotional challenges,” she explained.
