‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Ending Explained: Who Leaves AFC Richmond? Does Rebecca Lose The Club? And How Does ‘Ted Lasso’ Honor Mae?

Ted Lasso‘s Season 4 finale promised “Big changes in bunches,” and boy did it deliver.

After a three-year hiatus, Apple TV’s Emmy-winning comedy made its highly anticipated return and saw Ted (Jason Sudeikis) leave Kansas City behind, move back to London, and coach AFC Richmond’s new women’s team alongside his buddy Beard (Brendan Hunt) and the talented Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds).

Over nine episodes, we met a slew of new characters, got to know the Lady Greyhounds (though still not enough for my liking!), saw Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple) FINALLY get back together, said a heartwrenching goodbye to the late Ted Lasso star Anthony Head (who played Rupert Manion), unexpectedly lost our beloved Crown & Anchor pub owner May Greene (Annette Badland), and watched Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) struggle to figure out who’s secretly trying to take control of AFC Richmond away from her.

Thanks to Ted Lasso mysteriously changing its finale title from “The Departing Lass” to “Being Alive,” burning questions and fan theories have been swirling. Will Ted give the head coaching gig to Alice and step down to become Assistant Manager? How will the team honor Mae? What happens to the pub? To Mae’s shares? To the stage manager Ted’s crushing on? Will Roy and Keeley share their big baby news? Will any other OG Ted Lasso stars make appearances? And will Rebecca lose majority control of the club?

Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 10 and Decider’s Ted Lasso Season 4 finale recap have answers. So without further ado, let’s dive in!

Major Ted Lasso Season 4 finale spoilers ahead.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Ending Explained: Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 10 Recap

Ted Lasso‘s Season 4 finale opens with “The Tracks of My Tears” playing and rain falling outside the Crown & Anchor pub, which is closed for a private event: Mae’s celebration of life. Trusty trio Paul, Baz, and Jeremy are there, honoring the woman who was like a “mum” to them, the women’s team turned out, and everyone chugged Guinness in honor of the icon. Higgins ditches to answer a call from “HR.” And Keeley and Roy head home as her pregnancy nausea rages on. Roy admits, “I worry Mae’s death is our fault. We’re bringing one soul into the world, so another one has to go,” but Keeley calms him down and takes a moment to acknowledge how much is changing in their lives. Speaking of change! Roy’s Prick Agent Derrick calls and drops a bomb: Roy’s been offered the head coaching job at his former club, Chelsea. And just like that, he’s the one barfing!

Back at the pub, Ted Lasso dares to have Jane crash Mae’s funeral and call her “Meg” so she can brag about her show starring Emma Stone and Richard Schiff opening in West End. (PLEASE, WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!) Thankfully, Beard seems to be done with her, too. And tributes like Alice framing the team photo with Mae to hang behind the bar and the twins singing “The Parting Glass” in Mae’s honor help cleanse the energy. During the moving song, Ted clocks a teary-eyed Henry heading upstairs to their apartment and follows him to some quality father/son time. Ted tells him that sometimes life throws “big changes at you in bunches,” and shares that losing someone not only puts things into perspective, but makes his deep commitment to football seem silly. With death on the brain, Henry asks how Ted’s dad died, and recalls the story his nana told him — that he fell down the stairs and hit his head. Emotional and unsure if he should share the truth about his dad’s death by suicide, Ted lies, confirms his mother’s version of events, and promises Henry he won’t lose him any time soon.

After a special cover of the “Ted Lasso Theme” sung by Brandi Carlile plays, we see the women’s team prepping for their sold-out final match at Nelson Road. Lizzie shows up late with her two boys, unable to find childcare. And Keeley creates a new video to hype the team that goes viral — SO viral that Nate the Great (Nick Mohammed) sees it and pops by for a visit. Turns out he’s coaching the Polish National Football team. And he’s just in time for a Diamond Dogs reunion, featuring “The Cat People,” Alice. The group advises an anxious Roy on how to be a good dad. But Alice’s words of wisdom, “Don’t disappear when you feel inadequate,” hit the hardest. Meow!

Ted honors Mae again in his pregame speech, saying, “I can only think of one person who ain’t gonna be here that I know would want to be here. But assuming they got good Wi-Fi at the pubs up there in heaven, she’s gonna be watching y’all.” To add to the final match magic, Ted Lasso shows OG men’s team players Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), Isaac McAdoo (Kola Bokinni), Colin Hughes (Billy Harris), Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández), Moe Bumbercatch (Moe Hashim), Zoreaux (Moe Jeudy-Lamous), Maas (David Elsendoorn), Montlaur (Stephen Manas), and even Will Kitman (Charlie Hiscock) in the stands cheering the women on. Thanks to Roy asking, “Do you ever second-guess leaving Richmond for Man U?” We learn what Sam’s been up to. And in keeping with Ted Lasso’s Wizard of Oz references, Sam replies, “Sure, but as Dorothy learned, sometimes you have to go away to know where home truly is.” (Sam claims Dorothy is his auntie, who left his uncle for a dance instructor for a little while. Big scandal in the Obisanya family.)

Everyone’s living it up at the game except Rebecca, who’s fearful she’ll lose the club because Higgins learned the Milk Sisters sold their shares. Next time we see her and Higgins, they’re at a dreaded shareholders’ meeting, with only Paul, Baz, and Jeremy in attendance. Or so they think! Zelda makes her grand entrances and finally reveals Rupert wasn’t buying up the shares; she was! And now the women’s team is hers! Why? “I am helping a woman — ME! I wasted a lot of time trying to make the men who make the decisions in football listen to me, and the one way to make sure that they do is by owning a women’s team in the Premier League. So, thank you.” Rebecca looks distraught as she and Higgins have it out on stage, until they bring out a special guest: Zelda’s friend Hugo Riddles (Alex Blake). Turns out, HE bought the Milk Sisters’ shares and sided with Rebecca because he was sick of Zelda’s ‘tude. Then, Elaine Pinter of Pinter & Sons Zooms in to reveal (after a Pinter Pause) that Mae left the pub to Paul, Baz, and Jeremy, and her stack of shares to Rebecca, which gives Rebecca majority holding again.

Instead of cursing out self-described scorpion, Zelda, Rebecca forgives her. “I know you love the story of the scorpion and the frog. A lot of people do, but I care for a different one. A woman sees a scorpion drowning in the river, and she tries to help it over and over again, and keeps getting stung. The passerby says, ‘Why do you keep bothering to help something that hurts you over and over again?’ And the woman says, ‘It’s in the scorpion’s nature to sting, just as it’s in my nature to save. Why would I change my nature just because of theirs?’”

Back at the pub, Ted walks in on Henry struggling to do his math homework without Mae. He apologizes for missing so many of his football games this season and promises to shift things around so it doesn’t happen again next year. He also shares his dad’s real cause of death, though once again Ted Lasso pulls back to prevent us from hearing the important conversation.

Among the many changes in bunches is Roy leaving AFC Richmond. He breaks the news to Rebecca and Ted, who take it hard but are happy for him. Roy tells Rebecca how important taking risks is, which sparks some unspoken epiphany in her. In the final minutes of Ted Lasso Season 4 finale, Mae’s voice shares some final words of wisdom: Mary Oliver’s poem, “When Death Comes.” Rebecca realizes that Mae died doing what she loved, and that everyone still living should be more alive. So when her Dutch man who we haven’t seen or heard from in several episodes, visits her office, what does she do? PROPOSES, of course! “Fuck it, marry me!” to be specific. She says she’s done being a marriage hater and wants to start living her life. They both accept! So I guess that’s a thing that’s happening!

Before the end credits roll, Alice and Gemma part ways in the locker room ahead of the off-season. PB&J get settled behind the bar. Beard shaves his head. Roy finds a “You’re gonna be a great dad” going-away note and army man from Ted. And after we realize Alice is the one who’s been sitting in (and lowering) Ted’s chair every day, he gives her the going-away present he took back in Episode 2. It’s how she learns she’s been promoted to Head Coach/Manager, and Ted and Beard are Assistant Managers now.

After a shot of the new manager nameplates outside the coach’s office, the end credits roll and “Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You Think)” by The Specials plays us out.
