Brandi Carlile’s Cover Of ‘Ted Lasso’s Theme Song Is Here To Heal You

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Ted Lasso‘s music department knows ball.

As usual, Ted Lasso Season 4’s soundtrack slapped. But the finale’s opening credits featured an extra special cover of the “Ted Lasso Theme,” performed by 11-time Grammy-winner, Brandi Carlile.

And damn, was it beautiful. (You can listen to the full cover here and down below!)

While we don’t know exactly how Carlile ended up covering the Ted Lasso title song — originally co-written and performed by Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons and composer Tom Howe — we do know that Carlile and Mumford are close friends and collaborators who work, write, and perform together. (You may know “How” from Mumford’s 2022 “(self-titled)” album, which the two co-wrote and sang!)

The friends likely teamed up to make the Ted Lasso cover happen, and we also know that the show’s music supervisor, Christa Miller, has worked with Carlile before, too…

For those who don’t know, the Season 3 finale of Shrinking — Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein, and Jason Segel’s Apple TV comedy, on which Miller stars and also serves as music supervisor — featured another incredible Carlile needle drop.

Brandi Carlile’s “You Without Me” was the final song of Shrinking Season 3, and Miller shared the backstory with DECIDER.

“I think one of the best moments was Brandi Carlile’s song, which my daughter’s fiancé, Andrew Watt, produced,” Miller told DECIDER during Shrinking‘s Season 3 press day. “I heard it two years ago, and the second I heard it, I was like, ‘Well, that’s the first song for Shrinking! It has to be! I want it!’ And he’s like, ‘It’s not even finished. It’s being produced, relax.’ So last year I wanted it again. I’m like, ‘It’s for Shrinking!’ He’s like, ‘It’s not ready.’ And it was actually a blessing in disguise. It really should have been for this season.”

During production, Miller finally got the call she’d been waiting for, but the competition was fierce. “Brandi and her wife Catherine called me and said, ‘We have four other shows that want the song.’ And we were in the middle of shooting, and I’ve never done this before, but I was like, ‘We’re buying it! We want it!” Miller recalled. “And because we had it so early, I was able to bring it to Bill and the writers, who loved it. Thank god. So they wrote for it. And that makes it a whole different ballgame.”

We look forward to hearing the full backstory behind Carlile’s Ted Lasso cover. (And how Carlile got this iconic personalized AFC Richmond jersey.) But it’s no secret that the choice was an incredibly moving way to end the show’s first women’s season. Well done, team!

Ted Lasso Season 4 is now streaming on Apple TV.
