Popular fitness influencer busted riding bike during Berlin Marathon: ‘Truly dishonest behavior’

A Chinese fitness influencer was busted cheating during the Berlin Marathon and has since copped to what she described as “truly dishonest behavior.”

Yuanyuan Sun was disqualified from the Berlin Marathon after an image surfaced of the 30-year-old hitching a ride on the back of a bike during the race, according to the CBC.

She had finished the Sept. 27 marathon in 4:53:46, but according to the Official Marathon Time Integrity Unit on Instagram, she recorded her fastest split during the time “she was spotted on the back of a bike.”

Sun, who goes by Abeeeer on the social media platform RedNote where she has 520,000 followers, posted an apology admitting guilt while explaining she wasn’t feeling well during the race.

“My behavior to take a shortcut was disrespectful to the spirit of the marathon,” she wrote in Chinese, per the CBC. “I intentionally concealed this fact during my public sharing after the race. That was a truly dishonest behavior.”

A fellow marathoner took the photo of Sun on the bike and sent it to the Official Marathon Time Integrity Unit, their chief integrity officer told the CBC.

A Berlin Marathon spokesperson wouldn’t comment to the CBC about Sun specifically but said in instances of fraud, they “decide on appropriate measures and, where necessary, impose further sanctions.”

The fallout is hurting Sun’s wallet as Brooks China, a sportswear brand, has dropped her as a sponsored runner after she wore the company’s clothes and shoes during the race.

“Upon verifying the facts, Brooks China immediately terminated its relationship with the influencer and publicly reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to integrity, fairness, and the spirit of running,” a brand spokesperson told The Athletic.

The incident is reminiscent of Rosie Ruiz, who witnesses said cheated during the 1979 NYC Marathon in order to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which she won in 1980 and was said to have cheated in also.
