‘Sopranos’ star lists longtime NYC penthouse converted from a church for $19M

Little Steven is taking a big leap of faith.

Steven Van Zandt, the bandana-clad E Street Band guitarist who played mob consigliere Silvio Dante on “The Sopranos,” has listed his Greenwich Village penthouse inside a former church for $18.995 million.

The duplex sits at the top of Novare, a boutique condo at 135 W. Fourth St., a short stroll from Washington Square Park. The block lands where three downtown neighborhoods collide, with the West Village and SoHo both a few minutes away on foot. Mark D. Friedman and Richard Rosenthal of Brown Harris Stevens are handling the sale.

It’s the home’s second go-round this year. The same apartment hit the market in June at $15 million with Philip Hordijk of Leven Real Estate , which makes the fresh ask a roughly 27% jump in less than four months.

Van Zandt, 75, and his wife, actress Maureen Van Zandt, paid $6 million for the pad in 2008 , not long after the HBO mob drama wrapped. The Post reported at the time that the couple had put in an offer.  At the new number, a sale would fetch more than triple what they spent.

The building has a past as colorful as its owner. It went up in 1860 as the Washington Square Methodist Church, nicknamed the Peace Church. Developer Flank reworked the house of worship into eight apartments in 2006, preserving its stained glass and a 50-foot atrium.

Van Zandt’s unit measures about 3,500 square feet , which pencils out to roughly $5,400 a foot. The top floor is the party deck, with ceilings that climb 20 feet, old wooden rafters, jewel-toned church windows and steel ductwork left in plain view. A kitchen with a checkerboard backsplash anchors the room, and a folding glass wall leads to a 500-square-foot terrace with its own outdoor cooking setup.

“This duplex has one of the most inspired outdoor spaces in the city,” Friedman said in a statement.

“The sellers hope the next owner will enjoy this unique slice of NYC as much as they have over the last 18 years,” Friedman told The Post. MW Studio for Brown Harris Stevens

The listing counts three bedrooms and three baths, though the third bedroom is currently a media den sandwiched between two suites downstairs. The salvaged church glass carries through to the lower floor, and the layout leaves room for a studio or an extra lounge.

It’s a fitting crash pad for a guy with a resume this crowded. Van Zandt joined Bruce Springsteen’s band in 1975, walked away in 1984 and came back for good in 1999. He landed the Silvio role with no acting experience, and HBO turned his life into the 2024 documentary “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple.” He also fronts his own outfit, the Disciples of Soul.

He isn’t the first boldface name in the building. Jude Law once rented a different penthouse there, a unit that went on to seek $12.5 million in 2015.

The neighborhood is having a rock-star moment, too. Pink paid $21.5 million for a townhouse on West 11th Street this year, while Gracie Abrams picked up a second penthouse at 1 Fifth Avenue for $4.5 million.

“The sellers hope the next owner will enjoy this unique slice of NYC as much as they have over the last 18 years,” Friedman said.
