Texas mom accused of stabbing husband, 2 young kids was suffering from postpartum depression: report

A Texas mom accused of stabbing her two young children early Tuesday morning had been suffering from postpartum depression, according to her husband — whom she allegedly also knifed.

Holly Leeann Flores, 37, was charged with attempted murder after her husband called 911 around 4:20 a.m. to report he had been stabbed in the head at their home in the small town of Northlake, located around 30 minutes north of Fort Worth.

The Northlake mom is also accused of knifing her 3-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son.

Flores’ husband, 34-year-old Justin Hommel, told police she was suffering from postpartum depression at the time of the rampage, according to a newly released arrest affidavit obtained by WFAA.

Hommel also reportedly said he planned to sleep on a couch to be closer to his children because he was concerned by her behavior.

The 911 call indicated Hommel was trying to get to his children in another room while Flores was allegedly trying to stab him, according to Northlake Police Chief Robert Crawford.

Hommel can be heard asking his wife if this is a “postpartum thing” while on the phone to 911 during the alleged attack, the outlet reported.

On the night for the alleged rampage, Hommel said he saw Flores take a candle into his kid’s room which he thought was strange — and later woke up around 1 a.m. to the sound of his wife attempting to use a lighter in the bedroom, the affidavit alleges.

Hommel found his wife was lighting a candle inside the room and spotted a kitchen knife on the dresser, the outlet reported, citing police.

The kitchen knife “freaked him out” and he attempted to enter the room but Flores closed the door on him and he went back to sleep, according to the affidavit.

Hommel told police he later woke up to sounds of his children crying in their bedroom and knocked on the door when Flores began attacking him with the knife, the arrest docs state.

He was able to wrestle the knife away from Flores and officers observed bite marks on his arm which indicated a struggle.

When cops arrived at the family home early Tuesday morning, Hommel was standing in the driveway holding a knife with blood on his head, the arrest documents say.

Hommel dropped the knife and officers entered the family residence to find Flores and detain her.

The couple’s two young children, a 3-year-old girl and a 10-month-old boy, were found screaming by police during a protective sweep of the house, the affidavit states.

Both children were conscious when officers arrived but had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Hommel and his two young kids were rushed to the Fort Worth hospital. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the children remain in stable condition, WFAA reported, citing police.

Meanwhile, Flores was treated and released from the hospital, taken into custody and transported to the Denton County Jail on two charges of attempted capital murder and one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Crawford.

Crawford also revealed that cops had been called to the family’s address around five times since March — most of which were calls for welfare concerns.

The arrest affidavit confirmed cops had responded previously to the house for welfare concerns and overdoses.

A dispatcher in audio from the emergency radio traffic can be heard saying “they have a history of welfare concerns involving CPS with the mother,” according to audio posted to the scanner-monitoring site Broadcastify.

Child Protective Services confirmed it had been involved with the family but did not provide details about the matter, WFAA reported.
