Idina Menzel makes rare comment about ‘really hard’ split from ex-husband Taye Diggs: ‘It was very complicated’

Idina Menzel recalled the “really hard” time period where she and Taye Diggs’ marriage was ending, just as her career was on the rise.

“We were separating and it was really hard,” Menzel shared of their 2013 divorce during a New York Comic Con panel on Thursday, per People.

“And then ‘Frozen’ was coming up just as Taye — we were breaking up.”

Menzel said the 2014 Disney hit made her inescapable because her song from the “Frozen” soundtrack “Let It Go” was everywhere.

“The poor guy,” she quipped of Diggs. “It was ‘Let It Go.’ He’s in a mall and he’s like, ‘F–k this! It’s everywhere, ‘Let It Go, Let It Go.’ Like, ‘I can’t let it go!’”

“It was very complicated, that whole time,” she added, admitting that being a part of “Frozen” “saved” her as she was going through the emotional turmoil of her divorce.

“It was filling my heart with joy and love and forgiveness and all of that stuff,” Menzel shared. “And also being able to show my son this wonderful film.”

Menzel and Diggs first met while starring together in the original Broadway production of Jonathan Larson’s “Rent” in the mid ’90s. They also co-starred in the 2005 film adaptation.

They wed in 2003 and welcomed a son, Walker, now 17, in 2009.

The former couple announced their breakup in December 2013.

“Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time,” representatives for the couple told People magazine at the time. “Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time.”

Menzel previously opened up about the “turbulent” couple of years she faced because of how “Frozen” took off as her personal life was in shambles.

“Well, it’s been kind of a very, I guess, turbulent, dynamic couple of years,” she said in 2016.

“While having the success of ‘Frozen’ and having my career sort of catapulted in a new place, I had the juxtaposition of my personal life being, kind of, going through a divorce and all of the sadness and guilt and regret that comes with all of that.”

“So I had these sort of two dueling sides in my life and it just gave me a great place to go in the studio and work from.”

In 2017, Menzel got married to her other “Rent” co-star, Aaron Lohr.

As for Diggs, he was last romantically linked to star and singer Apryl Jones, who he dated from 2021 to 2023.

Since their split, the exes have forged an amicable co-parenting relationship for their son.

“She has a career and she has her own relationships and she still makes sure that Walker is where he needs to be when he needs,” Diggs told People of Menzel in 2022.

“He’s got the best coaches and the best teachers, and we’re at the best schools, and it’s all because of her.”
