One killed, 3 injured as reckless NYC Mercedes driver mows down pedestrians while trying to beat light: sources
An elderly Mercedes driver trying to beat the light whizzed through a Bronx intersection — sparking a chain-reaction crash that ended with two pedestrians killed and multiple other vehicles struck in a wild broad daylight scene Friday, law enforcement sources said.
The 81-year-old driver was heading west on Allerton Avenue when he blew through a steady red light at the Holland Avenue intersection around 2:15 p.m., police said.
He initially rear-ended two vehicles, before two more were hit in the pile-up, authorities said.
Four women — between the ages of 50 and 60 — were then hit as they crossed the street in the middle of the wild scene, cops and sources said.
They were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where two women died, one was listed in critical condition and another is expected to survive, the sources said.
The motorist, who was conscious and alert with minor injuries, told a witness he was trying to beat the light, the sources said.
The FDNY reported that EMS treated nine people following the wild collision.
