The four things we learned from Jets’ Week 5 win: Encouraging defensive signs beyond David Bailey

The Jets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 17-12 victory over the Browns on Sunday. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:

1. This is how we expected this defensive line to look entering the season. Deshaun Watson had no time to throw or even think on Sunday. The Jets registered eight sacks but it was even more than the sacks. It seemed like the pocket was collapsing on Watson all day long.

The headliner here is rookie David Bailey, who announced his arrival with three sacks, but it went beyond just Bailey. The Jets got an active push from the middle of the defensive line, something they failed to do in Chicago a week ago. Jowon Briggs, T’Vondre Sweat, Harrison Phillips and Darrell Jackson Jr. pushed the pocket and made Watson move off his spot.

You also have to credit Aaron Glenn for how aggressive he was in this game. Glenn sent a ton of blitzes at the Browns and they did not have answers for them. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. was particularly effective blitzing from his nickel spot. Even when the blitzes did not get to Watson, they forced him to move. He created a few plays off of these but for the most part the Jets shut Watson down.
